County Live Well Center Draws Industry Accolades DEVELOPMENT: Chollas View Project Noted for Artistic Design Elements By Ray Huard SAN DIEGO – Steinberg Hart architects and PCL Construction have collected numerous awards for the Southeastern Live Well Center since its completion last summer. They included a Gold Nugget Award from the Pacific Coast Builder Conference given to top innovators in design, planning and development from among 675 entries and American Public Works Association Project of the Year award. PCL also won awards on the project for the company’s recruiting drive to use local subcontractors. Owned by San Diego County, the two-story Southwestern Live Well Center provides a wide range of social services. Beyond the services it provides, the 60,000-square-foot Live Well center “becomes a resource for the community, where they can have events, things like job fairs, to build up the community,” said Daniel Stewart, a managing partner at Steinberg Hart. “We were really trying to create something that really provides an asset to the community at an important corner,” Stewart said. The two-story building at 5101 Market St., on the corner of Market Street and Euclid Avenue, is on the site of what had been the Tubman Chavez Community Center, which was razed to make room for Live Well Center. The new center is notable for its collection of artwork, including eight large metal panels painted with murals on the exterior wall and other art work throughout the building. “It’s almost an art gallery,” Stewart said. Nearly 30 local artists produced more than 60 pieces of art that are displayed throughout the building. As Steinberg Hart described it in an award submission, the building pays homage to the people who originally lived in the area with a design that incorporates motifs in window and floor patterning that reflect Native Floor to ceiling glass across much of the façade allows natural light to flow through the interior. “Because it is a fairly large building, we wanted to get into the middle of the building,” Stewart said. “We wanted the spaces that the community experiences to feel light and bright and comforting.” https://lnkd.in/gJkxf3ZW #design #architecture #construction
