On October 30 and 31, 2024, Ambassador Georg Sparber represented Liechtenstein at the Ministerial Conference on the Human Dimension of Ukraine’s Peace Formula, co-organized by Canada, Norway, and Ukraine. The Conference adopted the Montréal Pledge to help return prisoners of war, unlawfully detained civilians, and ensure the return of all children forcibly taken by Russia. Liechtenstein’s position, as always, is to uphold international law and to ensure accountability for the grave violations committed by Russia against Ukraine and its people. Liechtenstein supports all efforts to advance justice for Ukraine, in the International Criminal Court, the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE. The Russian aggression must meet with the full force of the rule of law. Looking back at a historic week as Liechtenstein becomes the IMF’s 191st member Last week, Prime Minister Dr. Daniel Risch led the Liechtenstein delegation to its first Annual Meetings as member of the International Monetary Fund. After signing the Articles of Agreement, Liechtenstein was welcomed by Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and Secretary Ceda Ogada into the Fund and attended the first Annual Meetings Plenary and IMFC meetings. Prime Minister Risch gave interviews with IMF Today and shared Liechtenstein’s experience in joining the IMF at the renowned Peterson Institute for International Economics. US-Liechtenstein Relations Enter new Era 🇺🇸🤝🇱🇮 On October 22 and 23, 2024, the inaugural US-Liechtenstein Strategic and Economic Partnership Dialogue was successfully launched by Deputy Secretary of U.S. Department of State Kurt Campbell and Liechtenstein Minister of Foreign Affairs Dominique Hasler. The Dialogue marks a significant deepening of the already strong partnership between Liechtenstein and the United States. It will serve as a standing platform to advance strategic cooperation, trade and investment, as well as innovation and security between our countries. A Historic Milestone for Liechtenstein as it joins the IMF Today, the Prime Minister of Liechtenstein Dr. Daniel Risch signed the original Articles of Agreement of the International Monetary Fund at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., marking an historic step for Liechtenstein by making it the IMF’s 191st member. This comes just a month after the people of Liechtenstein voted in favor of joining the IMF by popular vote. By becoming a part of the IMF, Liechtenstein not only gains stability and visibility for its own economy, it also gains a voice in global financial matters and strengthens its commitment to the international rule of law and sustainable growth for all nations. Last Wednesday, the Embassy of Liechtenstein was proud to team up with Women In International Security to launch a series of discussions on the future of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, leading up to the 25th anniversary of this groundbreaking agenda next October. Sincere thanks to Under Secretary Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins for her participation and keynote speech, and to panelists, Dr. Carolyn Washington, Dr. Shirley Graham, and Marisa O. Ensor, (she/her) PhD, LLM, for the high-quality discussion on a wide-range of issues, including sexual harassment of women in military organizations, local implementation of global commitments and the disproportionate impact of climate change on women.   The #WPSagenda is a milestone achievement in the United Nations' efforts to promote lasting peace, its core mandate. Yet, the agreements on paper remain far removed from the reality for women around the world, as sexual and gender-based violence in conflict, harmful stereotypes, and barriers to full and equal participation persist widely. The UN Security Council must do better to ensure accountability for violations of its own resolutions, and political and public pressure must increase to enforce these commitments. Liechtenstein will continue its advocacy for international criminal justice, a comprehensive and survivor-centered approach to gender-based violence in conflict (All Survivors Project), and political accountability for the Security Council. Guests from the food and beverage industry, as well as friends of the Embassy, were treated to an exclusive flight of wines presented by Hofkellerei’s Managing Director, Stefan Tscheppe. The event showcased the winery's long tradition in high-quality wine-making, which the Princely Family of Liechtenstein has been cultivating for centuries. Liechtenstein and South Dakota share a strong commitment to innovation and trade in the industrial sector. On the invitation of Luke J. Lindberg, President and CEO of South Dakota Trade, Ambassador Sparber attended the Rapid City Manufacturing and Trade Summit to showcase Liechtenstein’s economy and its role in global trade, emphasizing the Principality’s contributions to US supply chains through its high-tech manufacturing. For decades, Liechtenstein companies have been reliable partners in the US and other international markets. Thank you for an excellent discussion to fellow panelists Michelle Bekkering and Rob Hrabe.
