About us

EmblemHealth is one of America’s largest not-for-profit health insurers, serving more than three million people in the New York tristate area. With an 85-year legacy of serving New York communities, EmblemHealth offers a full range of commercial and government-sponsored health plans to employers, individuals, and families. We started back in the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression. Out of hard times, the idea of health insurance was born — a system that would protect everyday people from financial misfortune if they had an accident or illness. Two companies from those early days of health insurance, Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP), would later merge and become EmblemHealth. And after 85 years, our purpose as a not-for-profit is still the same — to provide quality, affordable health insurance for New Yorkers and their families. The EmblemHealth family of companies provides insurance plans, primary and specialty care, and wellness solutions. The family of companies covers the whole health journey, starting with affordable coverage through EmblemHealth, and ConnectiCare, a leading health plan in Connecticut. The family of companies also includes the AdvantageCare Physicians medical practice, and WellSpark Health, a barrier-breaking digital wellness company. As a family of companies with deep community roots, EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care and ConnectiCare Centers offer free wellness and community resources. Together, the family of companies creates healthier futures for customers and communities. We think of ourselves as an 85-year-old start-up — big enough to offer the stability and benefits of a major corporation, with a ferocious commitment to innovation, collaboration, and flexibility. We believe in what we’re doing. And we’re looking for passionate people to join us.

Imagine going to the same office for years, seeing the same doctor, having the same follow-up appointment, and being hit with a bill for a facility fee because the physician office is know considered part of the hospital's outpatient facility but is miles away. Another example of healthcare is becoming unaffordable and unsustainable while inviting regulation to curb these revenue generating schemes.

Yesterday we celebrated the kickoff of our Community Diabetes Wellness Program at Neighborhood Care Fordham Road. The event featured a sampling of community services offered by EmblemHealth and other community-based organizations. The Community Diabetes Wellness Program will provide a comprehensive approach to help keep people with prediabetes from progressing into diabetes and help those with diabetes to manage their chronic condition. At yesterday's event, more than 80 people received free A1C screenings and access to prediabetes and diabetes management resources. "Today we are launching our Community Diabetes Wellness Program in the Bronx, an area where the need is high and the opportunity to make a difference is great," said our CEO Karen Ignagni. "We are thrilled to partner with the HealthyNYC initiative to bring resources necessary to help stop this silent killer." Many thanks to our distinguished guests Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella), and State Senator Gustavo Rivera, as well as representatives from Governor Hochul’s office, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and our community partners who help make this event a tremendous success. Learn more about the ongoing program at the link. https://lnkd.in/efBhqhRN

Last week, our CEO Karen Ignagni delivered an insightful keynote at the 2024 Innovations in Value-Based Care Conference alongside Jason Helgerson, CEO of HSG. Health care leaders gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities in shaping the future of value-based care. Karen highlighted that “only 10% of health care payments nationwide flow through population-based payment models” and emphasized the need for a broader, integrated approach. She stated, “It’s not just health plan to hospital; it’s health plan to physician to hospital to PBM to community-based organizations and a whole bunch of things in between.” Karen also addressed the need for achieving interoperability, noting, “It’s one thing to put out this elusive goal; it’s quite another to step back and say, ‘Here’s how we get from here to there.’” We’re proud to be at the forefront of these critical conversations, advancing patient-centered care for all.

Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) play a vital role in promoting diversity and inclusion within our organization. These groups foster advocacy, allyship, and equity, providing employees with a platform to share their voices and cultivate a sense of belonging. ERGs are instrumental in supporting our mission by: 1. Creating a Strong Internal Culture: ERGs help build an environment where every employee feels valued and included, contributing to higher employee satisfaction and retention. 2. Enhancing Professional Development: By offering networking opportunities and fostering mentorship, ERGs empower employees to advance their careers within the company. 3. Driving Innovation: Diverse perspectives lead to innovative solutions. ERGs enable employees to bring their unique insights and experiences to the table, enhancing creativity and problem-solving. 4. Improving Business Outcomes: ERGs contribute to a positive company reputation, attracting top talent and fostering customer loyalty through our commitment to diversity and inclusion. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we spotlight our Hispanic/Latinx ERG, Presente. Presente is dedicated to enhancing the visibility and inclusion of Hispanic/Latinx employees through networking, discussions on impactful topics, and volunteer support. This ERG also provides a space for us to honor and celebrate our rich cultural heritage as a united familia. Fanny Greene, Provider Relationship manager and Presente member, has experienced the profound impact an ERG can have on the experience of its members: “I had the privilege of leading the Presente ERG from 2020 to 2023, and it was an incredibly fulfilling experience. It helped me become more confident in speaking to large groups, and I developed a range of new skills along the way. I also had the chance to meet amazing individuals, listen to their unique stories, and highlight their contributions as part of our community-building efforts.” By investing time and energy in ERGs, together we can continue to build a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone thrives.
