The VR and immersive training solution for aging care.

About us

Embodied Labs® is revolutionizing training in healthcare and social services by enabling care providers to learn what it’s like to have an age-related disease or impairment through first-person virtual experiences. Fostering actionable empathy with interactive learning journeys, our platform empowers care providers to deliver more compassionate, human-centered care that improves outcomes, increases understanding, and enhances quality of life. Over 100+ organizations across the aging care continuum - including government entities, academic institutions, senior services organizations, and Fortune 100 retail health companies - have adopted the Embodied Labs’ platform to up-skill their own staff, teach the next generation of healthcare workers, and support the informal family and friend caregivers they serve in their communities. Developed with clinical experts, our first-person experiences are powerful and memorable. They create a perceived lived experience that allows learners to remember rather than imagine, with branching narratives that enable better decision-making through choices. Founded in 2016, the Embodied Labs® experience library includes shared immersive experiences such as living through progressing Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, and embodying the first person perspectives of other common care situations such as PTSD, trauma-informed care, social isolation, aging in the LGBTQ+ community, and health assessments in complex home and community-based settings. Our experiences: • Provide a first-person perspective of older adults and care providers as they navigate the aging process. • Are designed with world renowned subject matter experts, clinicians, and immersive content designers to serve the needs of organizations that work with care providers and older adults. • Return greater benefits in training outcomes, learner satisfaction, and engagement compared traditional, non-immersive methods.

Today is World Alzheimer's Day 🧠💜 As we pause to think about our friends, family members, and individuals living with Alzheimer's, we want to take a moment and reflect on how we can better understand and support them in their journey. One way is to incorporate the The SPECAL (Specialized Early Care for Alzheimer's) method. At the heart of SPECAL, are Three Golden Rules that run contrary to commonsense communication styles which are taken for granted when dementia is not an issue. They ask us to step into a different world - the world as experienced by someone with dementia. These rules are: 1️⃣ Don't ask direct questions Instead of putting them on the spot, offer information and watch for reactions. This reduces stress and promotes positive engagement. 2️⃣ Listen to the expert The person with dementia is the expert on their experience. Pay attention to their words and actions – they're communicating important information about their needs and feelings. 3️⃣ Don't contradict Avoid arguing or correcting. Enter their reality and find ways to agree. This builds trust and reduces anxiety. Integrating these practices can lead to: ✅ Reduced stress for both the individual and caregiver ✅ Improved communication and connection ✅ Enhanced quality of life for those living with dementia As professionals in healthcare and senior care, or as a friend or family caregiver, utilizing these principles can significantly impact our approach to Alzheimer's care. Let's commit to fostering understanding, compassion, and effective care strategies when it comes to Alzheimer's and dementia. Given the overwhelming response, we've decided to keep this valuable resource live and accessible to all. Virtual Reality (aka: immersive) training might seem like a niche concept, but we've seen usage grow tremendously, and for good reason. A recent Wall Street Journal article "Companies Finally Find a Use for Virtual Reality at Work" perfectly highlights the growing adoption of VR for employee training and at Embodied Labs, we couldn't agree more! Why VR Training Matters VR's Effectiveness: Studies show VR training can be significantly more impactful than traditional methods. Imagine embodying the experience of someone with Parkinson's, de-escalating sensitive situations, or building empathy in a safe, immersive environment. VR makes it possible. Focus on Both Technical and Soft Skills: VR allow us to be versatile, from teaching nursing students what it feels like to have different stages of Alzheimer's, to simulating home health assessments, immersive reality offers customizable courses for a wide range of skills and situations. Data-Driven Improvement: VR training allows companies to gather valuable data within simulated scenarios. This data can then be used to refine training programs and ensure maximum effectiveness. At Embodied Labs, we are passionate about creating engaging and effective immersive training solutions that improve care provider resilience, empathy, and preparedness. Read more about how other companies are using immersive training in The Wall Street Journal here: https://lnkd.in/gxgi2_QZ

In August, we had another fantastic training session with The 80th Street Residence team. We had the opportunity to explore Embodied Labs® (Beatriz Lab), where team members took on the perspective of Beatriz, a middle-aged Latina woman experiencing the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Through this immersive experience, participants gained insight into how individuals living with AD navigate changes in vision, hearing, movement, concentration, and communication. They also shared in the evolving dynamics within Beatriz’s family as her condition progressed. It's always a pleasure to work with such an open-minded team eager to learn new skills.
