The VR and immersive training solution for aging care.

About us

Embodied Labs® is revolutionizing training in healthcare and social services by enabling care providers to learn what it’s like to have an age-related disease or impairment through first-person virtual experiences. Fostering actionable empathy with interactive learning journeys, our platform empowers care providers to deliver more compassionate, human-centered care that improves outcomes, increases understanding, and enhances quality of life. Over 100+ organizations across the aging care continuum - including government entities, academic institutions, senior services organizations, and Fortune 100 retail health companies - have adopted the Embodied Labs’ platform to up-skill their own staff, teach the next generation of healthcare workers, and support the informal family and friend caregivers they serve in their communities. Developed with clinical experts, our first-person experiences are powerful and memorable. They create a perceived lived experience that allows learners to remember rather than imagine, with branching narratives that enable better decision-making through choices. Founded in 2016, the Embodied Labs® experience library includes shared immersive experiences such as living through progressing Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, and embodying the first person perspectives of other common care situations such as PTSD, trauma-informed care, social isolation, aging in the LGBTQ+ community, and health assessments in complex home and community-based settings. Our experiences: • Provide a first-person perspective of older adults and care providers as they navigate the aging process. • Are designed with world renowned subject matter experts, clinicians, and immersive content designers to serve the needs of organizations that work with care providers and older adults. • Return greater benefits in training outcomes, learner satisfaction, and engagement compared traditional, non-immersive methods.

𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎 👪 The number of people in the adult population providing care and working outside the household has increased from 1 in 7 in 2020 to 1 in 5 today. A task made even more complicated by the complexities of conditions like dementia. In the world of caregiving, family members sometimes find themselves needing for the first time ever, to both care for their elderly parents, and work as a team while they do it 🏡 Coordinating care with other family members can be challenging, but it’s crucial for providing the best support to aging individuals. Here are a few key tips to keep in mind while working together: ↳ Communicate regularly – Use group calls or texts to stay updated. ↳ Plan ahead – Discuss finances, health info, and roles. ↳ Play to strengths – Assign tasks based on each family member's skills. ↳ Give each other grace – Accept that everyone processes differently. ↳ Seek professional help – Bring in third-party support when needed. By working together and supporting one another, we can navigate the caregiving journey with compassion and strength, ensuring our loved ones receive the care they deserve. #embodiedlabs #nursing #seniorcare #immersivelearning #dementia

We were honored to have our Head of Sales Seamus Sullivan join yesterday's Community Lounge for Hilarity for Charity (HFC) and their The Youth Movement Against Alzheimer's. This topic hits close to home for our CEO, Carrie Shaw. At just 14, Carrie witnessed her mother's first symptoms of early-onset Alzheimer's. It took five years for a proper diagnosis, after which Carrie, alongside her sisters, father, and community, devoted years to caregiving. Organizations like HFC, The Youth Movement Against Alzheimer's, and Lorenzo's House are making significant strides in supporting young adult caregivers. They're creating leadership opportunities and raising awareness about the unique experiences and needs of these individuals. Thanks for including us in this important conversation which continues to shed light on the critical intersection of youth, caregiving, and Alzheimer's awareness. #caregiving #agetech

Also a big thank you to Jazmin Zinnerman and Giovanna Manson-Hing, MA, CDP, CPT for the opportunity and for the work that you do every day to serve young adults. The work of my community of changemakers for aging is inspiring. The recent CMS Staffing Mandate has highlighted a critical issue in our aging care sector: a severe workforce shortage. As LeadingAge Maryland points out, the state would need 206 additional full-time registered nurses, and more than 1,897 full-time nursing assistants to comply – professionals who simply aren't available in the current job market. While well-intentioned, top-down mandates can't solve a problem of this magnitude. We need creative, community-driven solutions to grow and sustain our direct care workforce. This shortage isn't unique to Maryland. It's a national crisis that demands innovative, multi-faceted solutions: ↳ Enhancing education and training programs to attract new talent ↳ Improving compensation and benefits to retain existing caregivers ↳ Leveraging technology to support and augment human care ↳ Creating clear career pathways to make caregiving a desirable long-term profession ↳ Addressing burnout and mental health concerns in the industry While we can't solve the pressing workforce issues in aging care alone, we're deeply inspired by the leaders paving the way, tackling our workforce challenges from multiple angles. Some are spearheading new and inventive training for caregivers, nurses, and medical students, while others are pioneering innovative ways to grow (and fairly compensate) our direct care workforce. These leaders are lighting the path toward a more sustainable future in aging care and we'd like to recognize them here: 📣 Amy Leigh Overton-Mccoy and her team at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. 📣 Kelly Aldrich DNP, RN, NI-BC, FHIMSS, FAAN, Kanah Lewallen, Jennifer Kim and colleagues at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. 📣 Jaime Hannans and team at California State University Channel Islands. 📣 Sean Kelly, Kari Olson, and the Front Porch Communities & Services team. 📣 Marvell Adams Jr., Chance Browning, and Caregiver Action Network. 📣 Susan DeMarois and the California Department of Aging's #CalGROWS initiative. 📣 Plus our own Carrie Cusker MS, BSN, RN and Tonia Nguyen, OTD, OTR/L for their dedicated work alongside our mighty Embodied Labs® team. We call for the continued collaboration needed to build a robust, resilient, well-compensated workforce that can provide quality care for our aging population. Together, we can create a future of healthy aging for all.

LeadingAge Maryland has joined forces with 21 LeadingAge State Affiliates and 20 Attorneys General in a lawsuit seeking to overturn CMS' Staffing Mandate. We share CMS’ goal of ensuring older adults and others have access to high quality skilled nursing care. We have continued to advocate, along with LeadingAge National, that the staffing mandate as written is untenable, given the documented shortage of registered nurses and other nursing professionals in our state and across the country. Our membership includes some of the state's oldest, not-for-profit mission-driven nursing homes, many of whom have decades and even century long histories in their community. We are proud to take this opportunity to advocate on their behalf. We invite you to learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eM84g8X9

The nature of the caregiving world can at times feel isolating. It is in sharing our stories that we can begin to heal and connect with one another. Which is why it is with great joy that we anticipate the documentary, "Caregiving", set to premiere on PBS in 2025. This powerful film will shine a light on the 50 million Americans providing unpaid care to family members. From systemic challenges to personal stories, "Caregiving" will raise awareness of the vital yet often unseen role caregivers play in our society. 💙 As Cooper himself said, "Everyone will end up caring for a loved one at some point in their life." His personal connection to caregiving fuels this project, and we look forward to seeing this conversation take center stage. Let's raise awareness for caregivers together, and work to create meaningful change! Dear Caregiver, We see you, and we care about you. In times of high stress, self-care can feel out of reach, but it’s still so important. Here are a few gentle suggestions for when you’re feeling overwhelmed. ↳ Be active: Find activities you enjoy like walking, dancing, gardening, or playing with a pet. Even short exercise helps. ↳ Prioritize sleep: Try for 7-9 hours each night. Create a bedtime routine and stick to a regular sleep schedule. ↳ Reduce stress: Explore relaxation techniques like meditation, tai chi, or yoga. Utilize free apps for guided meditations or listening to relaxing music. ↳ Make time to decompress: Do something you enjoy weekly that’s just for you, like catching up on a TV show, reading, dancing, drawing, or another hobby. ↳ Keep up with your health: Your health is just as important as the one you are caring for. Don’t skip your doctor’s visits. Let them know you’re a caregiver—and see if they know of any local resources. ↳ Reach out for support: Talk to family, friends, or a therapist. Join a caregiver support group, online or in-person. ↳ Take a break if you need it: Ask someone to step in, hire an aide, or ask for help for a few hours of relief. ↳ Be kind to yourself: You don’t have to pretend to be cheerful all the time. Feelings of sadness, frustration, and guilt are normal and understandable. Express your feelings by writing in a journal or talking with a friend. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it's necessary. Your well-being matters, and by prioritizing your own health, you're better equipped to care for others. You're doing important work, and you deserve support and compassion too.
