About us
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management's (EM) mission is to address the nation’s Cold War environmental legacy resulting from decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. This legacy includes some of the world’s most dangerous radioactive sites with large amounts of radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel, excess plutonium and uranium, thousands of contaminated facilities, and contaminated soil and groundwater. Created in 1989, EM has the responsibility for completing the cleanup of this Cold War legacy and managing the remaining nuclear materials. As the largest environmental cleanup program in the world, EM has been charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware. EM has made substantial progress in nearly every area of nuclear waste cleanup and has completed cleanup at 92 of these sites.

Savannah River Site Manager Mike Budney presented outgoing SRNL Laboratory Director Vahid Majidi with a Secretary of Energy Exceptional Service Award for his contributions to the U.S. Department of Energy and Savannah River National Laboratory. Majidi’s exemplary efforts and exceptional leadership was key to SRNL’s success through a period of significant change and growth, becoming an independent Federally Funded Research and Development Center with enhanced ability to provide objective analysis and advice to the government across its wide array of technological and scientific expertise. After seven years leading SRNL, Vahid reflects on how SRNL puts science to work serving the country in the most recent Science at Work podcast. With experience in the areas of chemistry, measurement science and technology, national and homeland security, science and technology policy, and nuclear nonproliferation, Vahid reflects on what it means to be a national laboratory and why they are good for America. EM's Portsmouth Site is well known for encouraging year-round STEM opportunities with students of all ages in the community. This fall, more than 1,400 students from 30 high schools in five nearby counties descended on the site for the annual Science Alliance. In its 13th year, Science Alliance is one of the largest hands-on science events in southern Ohio. Students enjoy science activities, meet with college and local industry representatives and learn about the site’s history and plans for future development. Read more here ⬇️

[Our Best Posts of 2024] Meet the elusive mountain lions of Los Alamos! Hari Viswanathan, an environmental scientist at the Lab, used a motion sensor and DSLR camera to capture these beautiful creatures right in our backyard. 📸 Our Lab biologists collaborate with neighboring agencies, like Bandelier National Monument, to track the mountain lions’ movements with game cameras and radio collars. It's part of a long-term, multi-agency study investigating how large mammals respond to wildfire and forest restoration projects. #MountainLions #WildlifePhotography #LosAlamos
