The Canadian Web3 Council recently submitted its recommendations as part of the government's consultation on strengthening Canada's financial sector. We're advocating for regulatory frameworks that protect consumers while fostering innovation. A principles-based, technology-neutral approach can help Canada build a thriving digital economy and remain competitive. Our submission highlights the need for regulatory collaboration, better access to financial services, and clearer guidance on #stablecoins. Stablecoins are integral to the crypto ecosystem, facilitating payments, remittances, liquidity, and supporting DeFi applications. We believe the current regulatory approach in Canada, where the Canadian Securities Administrators classify stablecoins as securities or derivatives, is restrictive and risks stifling innovation. We recommend treating fiat-backed stablecoins as payment instruments rather than securities, an approach that would better align with international efforts such as those taken by the EU, UK, and Singapore.
