Sometimes we are unable to deliver a meal because the older adult may not hear the door, or they may be at a doctor's appointment or otherwise occupied. Sometimes getting in touch with the older adult to get them their meal can be challenging. Recently staff members Ebony and Gisselle encountered this issue with a client. They had a client who needed his meals but they were having difficulty connecting to him. He indicated he was having issues with his phone. Ebony suggested to Gisselle, when she delivered his meals, to ask him if she could check his phone. It turns out he had turned his ringer off. Encore Community Services was recently highlighted in a City Limits article! As the population of older New Yorkers rapidly increases, becoming the fastest-growing segment in the city, they are increasingly experiencing isolation and food insecurity. Last year, Encore provided 500,000 meals to food-insecure older adults in our older adult centers and to those who are home-bound. However, this figure represents only a fraction of the need. Public funding for meals is limited to one meal per day, five days a week (70% of our budget is allocated to the Department for the Aging, the least-funded agency in New York City). Encore's Aging Friendly Community Partnership (AFCP) partnered with the Midtown North Precinct and invited Community Officer, Detective Perez, to host a safety presentation at our Lifelong Learning Center. Addressing the issues around safe neighborhoods, the presentation focused on several topics of concern regarding older adult safety. These topics included traveling, transportation, shopping, entering the home safely, medical information, scams and their various forms, and reporting crime. The Age-Friendly Community Partnership helps Encore better serve our older adult members and foster an aging-friendly community in Hell’s Kitchen and the broader west-side area. Our goal is to form a diverse network of local businesses and volunteers who ensure older adults are not isolated, have access to healthy meal choices, and thrive in their community. #agingfriendly #agingfriendlycommunitypartnership #safety #NeighborhoodLiving #EncoreforLife #community

This September, Encore is celebrating Healthy Aging Month with our members by doing a 30-Day Vegan Challenge, inspired by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau’s book! Plant-based diets have health benefits, can change how you think about food, and empower you to improve your well-being. Diet and insufficient nutrition can impact brain and body health as you age. This challenge is one of the initiatives we are introducing to give our members new tools to consider so they can age longer.   Encore Older Adult Members will receive a copy of the book, join a community of people doing the challenge, and free plant-based food!   Stay tuned for updates throughout September! #encoreforlife #healthyaging #nutrition #plantbasedfoods #vegan
