  • These trailblazing women are transforming architecture and design… Less than 1% of U.S. licensed architects are Black women, and only 2.3% of interior designers identify as Black or African American. While these numbers remain low, Black-led design firms are on the rise. Progress is happening, but there's still much room for improvement in the design and architecture industry. Below are the stories of women who are breaking barriers and making history in the design industry: ✨Tavia Forbes & Monet Masters: Despite her father being a furniture maker, Tavia Forbes didn’t consider a design career until she saw Vern Yip on TLC’s “Trading Spaces.” Monet Masters, on the other hand, had an innate talent for noticing a space's story through its details. Their paths crossed on a client project, and the two decided to launch their luxury interior design studio, Forbes Masters. They envision the future of design as more inclusive and diverse, already witnessing changes as clients embrace personal, global, and art-inspired styles. They want the future of design to provide broader access to both the design process and the professionals who deliver these services. They believe that cultural diversity should be integral to design, not just an added element. ✨Justina Blakeney: Justina Blakeney envisions a future of design that’s not only beautiful but also sustainable, diverse, and thoughtful. She emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient practices, and working in harmony with nature. Blakeney advocates for design that considers social, ethical, and emotional impacts, and promotes diversity and representation. ✨Sandra Githinji: From a young age, Sandra Githinji knew she wanted a creative career. Driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully, she graduated from RMIT University in 2016 and worked at notable architecture firms across the Asia Pacific. Battling burnout, she resigned and founded her own practice, redefining design through cultural histories, pedagogy, activism, and built form. Last year, she collaborated with the Black in Design Collective for CB2 and now focuses on enhancing accessibility within sub-Saharan Africa. We're proud to share these stories of perseverance, creativity, and commitment to diversity despite adversity. They serve as powerful reminders of the potential we all have to shape a more inspiring and inclusive future. • A crane-sized 3D printer is creating the world's first 3D-printed hotel in Marfa, Texas. El Cosmico is expanding with 43 hotel units and 18 homes over 60 acres, thanks to the innovative 3D printing of Austin-based ICON and Bjarke Ingels Group. Liz Lambert, El Cosmico's owner, discussed the unprecedented creativity the technology offers, allowing for unique architectural features like curves and domes. ICON's Vulcan printer, a massive 46.5-feet wide and weighing 4.75 tons, uses a special cement mixture called Lavacrete. Adjustments are made based on weather conditions to ensure print quality. The first two units—a three-bedroom residence and a single-room hotel—are already under construction, with walls reaching 12 feet high. The hotel expansion is set for completion by 2026, with units priced between $200 and $450 per night. By blending cutting-edge technology with artistic vision, El Cosmico is set to revolutionize the future of hospitality and design in the heart of West Texas. • The restaurant that takes being on top of the world to a whole new level. Ojo offers a contemporary haven complete with an outdoor terrace, shimmering bar, and unparalleled views of downtown Bangkok. Crafted by the renowned designer, Ou Baholyodhin, Ojo is a gilded architectural masterpiece. Drawing from his journey through Central America, Baholyodhin conjured this vibrant, eclectic restaurant perched 76 floors above Bangkok — the highest rooftop restaurant & bar in the city. Gold is the prominent design element, adding elegance throughout the space. The restaurant also features rich, jewel-toned colors inspired by precious metals and gemstones, creating a visually stunning environment that feels luxurious. If you look closely, you will uncover subtle references to the ancient wisdom of civilizations that are woven throughout the venue. For example, the Mayans' mathematical expertise influenced the gorgeous geometrical forms and maze-like pleated mirrors. Ojo redefines Mexican cuisine, creating an enchanting, one-of-a-kind atmosphere through meticulous design. • Gen Z is projected to reach $12 trillion in purchasing power by 2030. Here is what you need to know… This tech-savvy generation operates primarily on social media, making them resistant to conventional marketing tactics. To engage Gen Z, retailers need to embrace their diversity, prioritize convenience, and use social media for discovery rather than direct sales. Here are four ways retailers can connect with Gen Z effectively: 1️⃣ Recognize the diversity within Gen Z, spanning multiple life stages -- currently ages 12 to 27. 2️⃣ Make convenience first priority: Gen Z values convenience, shaped by platforms like Amazon and Etsy. They seek out options that offer quick and easy access to multiple choices. Flexible return policies and a seamless multi-platform shopping experience are crucial to retaining Gen Z customers. 3️⃣ Use social media for discovery, not purchase: With roughly 90% of Gen Z using social platforms like Instagram and YouTube, these channels serve primarily as discovery platforms. 4️⃣ Rethink discounts: While Gen Z is drawn to discounts due to inflation, they are willing to pay a premium for brands they trust and whose products align with their values. Building loyalty with Gen Z requires trust, convenience, value, and authenticity. Ongoing research and adaptive strategies are essential to staying relevant to this influential generation. • This monumental building is adorned with 3,600 handmade tiles! Kengo Kuma and Associates have unveiled the UCCA Clay Museum in Yixing, China—a 37,000-square-foot tribute to artistry and culture. Covered in 3,600 handmade tiles, the museum reflects the city’s legacy as the “ceramic capital” of China. Inspired by the nearby Shushan Mountain and traditional Chinese pottery kilns, the museum's design blends seamlessly with the landscape. Local artisans crafted the tiles, with hues mirroring pottery's transformation during firing, while local children contributed carved designs to celebrate the region’s heritage. The museum’s bamboo-lined arches and wooden lattice roof enhance its connection to the surroundings. Its first exhibition, The Ways of Clay, runs through February 2025, showcasing select award-winning works from the International Ceramics Festival Mino of the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Japan. Culture, craftsmanship, and nature collide, at this massive museum that illustrates the beauty of clay in every corner.
