A 200,000 sf LEED Platinum, Historic Landmark. A "Living Laboratory" for training, research and community engagement.
About us
Designed and equipped by corporate partners, this 6.6 acre urban complex will promote energy-sector research and innovation and create direct and deliberate bridges to job creation, entrepreneurship and urban economic revitalization. It is positioned in the heart of a historic neighborhood that is sandwiched between the downtown central business district and the campuses of the region’s major research universities. Because the Hill District has suffered more than fifty years of economic disenfranchisement, community partners are working to ensure that this Energy Innovation Center will become an instrument of urban economic revitalization. The energy technology innovation cluster in the Pittsburgh region has a rich history and a promising future. World-class capacity exists here in areas ranging from carbon management to nuclear reactor design, wind turbine manufacturing, materials and sensors, electric power distribution and control, shale gas production, and advanced building systems. Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, the region’s corporations, research universities, economic development organizations, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory have collaborated to develop this new Center so that it will realize a vision for accelerating the Nation’s transformation of its energy systems to achieve improved national security, competitiveness, and environmental stewardship. This Center will co-locate collaborative university-industry projects, proof-of-concept energy technology demonstration laboratories, an early-stage business incubator and targeted workforce training programs. Corporate partners will showcase new products and deploy advanced energy management systems. Finally, the work of this LEED Platinum Center will catalyze the development of the surrounding 42-acre community footprint using international best practices for energy-efficient neighborhoods.

At a gathering held at the Energy Innovation Center, Acting U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Julie Su presented Pittsburgh nonprofit Catalyst Connection with more than $700,000 from a federal program to get more women into manufacturing jobs. “Really, we are working toward a day where there will no longer be nontraditional occupations for women, because opportunities everywhere for women are going to be the norm, and for women of color in particular, who have been left out for far too long,” said Su. "Catalyst President and CEO Petra Mitchell said her organization’s goal is to recruit more women into its manufacturing apprenticeship program." More here: https://lnkd.in/g6YPVdyw
📣 Exciting News for Women in Manufacturing! 💼⚙️ Yesterday, Acting Secretary Julie Su visited Pittsburgh to announce a major workforce development initiative focused on creating opportunities for women in manufacturing. 🎉 At a gathering at the Energy Innovation Center, Su shared the news that Catalyst Connection will receive $716,701 in funding through the National Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant initiative. This funding will expand Catalyst’s efforts to recruit and support women in manufacturing apprenticeships, building a more inclusive workforce. "Really, we are working toward a day where there will no longer be nontraditional occupations for women," Su emphasized during her visit. This initiative is a big step in that direction! 🙌 Partner4Work is proud to stand with Catalyst Connection and local leaders like Mayor Ed Gainey, County Executive Sara Innamorato, and PA State Representative Summer Lee, as we collaborate to ensure equitable access to good-paying jobs. Together, we are building an "opportunity infrastructure" that opens doors for women and underrepresented communities. 🚪✨ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g6YPVdyw #WorkforceDevelopment #WomenInManufacturing #OpportunityForAll #PittsburghInnovation #EquityInAction #DOL #Apprenticeships #WANTO

The clean energy boom is already bringing back made-in-America manufacturing. Last week, Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation hosted an event where The Heinz Endowments and Climate Power brought together three clean manufacturing CEOs, Congresswoman Summer Lee, County Executive Sara Innamorato, and Mayor Ed Gainey at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh to discuss the growing sector in western Pennsylvania. CorePower Magnetics, Exus Renewables North America, and Vitro Architectural Glass, have deep roots in the region and, thanks to support from the Clean Energy Plan, are exploring new investments and expansions that could lead to over 1,500 new jobs in the coming years. These companies have committed to union labor for construction of their planned facilities and union neutrality on their shop floors. (L-R) Don Evans, CEO of Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, Dhaval Bhalodia, partner and global head of performance management of Exus Renewables, Sam Kernion, CEO of CorePower Magnetics, Ed Gainey, Mayor of Pittsburgh, @Summer Lee, U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District, Sara Innamorato, Allegheny County Executive, Aaron Brickman, senior principal at Rocky Mountain Institute, Darrin Kelly, president of the Allegheny-Fayette Labor Council and Brad Boone, sales director of Vitro Architectural Glass pose for a photograph after the roundtable discussion regarding the recent growth of clean energy projects in Western Pennsylvania and how the federal clean energy plan is creating new opportunities for workers, fostering a more resilient and sustainable economy, and positioning Western PA as a leader in energy production and innovation at the Energy Innovation Center on August 28, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh Gateways has partnered with Clean Energy Center at Penn College (CEC) to co-develop a workforce development hub, training lab, and community engagement space in Homewood, set to open in early 2025. Karen Benner (pictured) joined Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation this spring as Director of Building Performance Programs to lead the partnership with Penn College, and to promote workforce development and training, contractor growth and apprenticeships, and community outreach and awareness. The mission of the CEC Pittsburgh is to teach how to reduce energy consumption in homes and communities, while also improving comfort and safety. Programs will focus on building performance training, providing in-demand skills and certifications for both residential renovations and new home construction careers. Karen has been working in the residential construction industry for over 25-years, earned professional accreditations in sustainability in 2009, and was named National Assocation of Home Builders’ Best-In-Green Young Professional of the Year in 2015. Prior to joining Pittsburgh Gateways, she spent 5-years as an independent consultant, helping contractors improve profit margins and reduce risk through better project management tools and operational efficiency. “I am thrilled to have joined Pittsburgh Gateways in this new role, and for the opportunity to collaborate with all regional partners working at the intersection of energy efficient & healthy housing, affordable home ownership and environmental justice. The Penn College Clean Energy Center team has been fantastic to work with, and we look forward to a successful partnership maximizing our impact for current and future generations of our residents.” For the full story, read the press release from Penn College https://lnkd.in/ep-DDhGA.
