🎉 Congratulations to the 5th cohort of Introduction to the Construction Trades – PIT2Work on their outstanding achievement! 🛠️ It was truly inspiring to witness 16 talented young adults complete the intensive five-week pre-apprentice training program, which equips them with essential skills for successful careers in the union trades. Several graduates have already been accepted into prestigious apprenticeship programs with the Carpenters, Operating Engineers Local 66, IUPAT DC7 Painters and Allied Trades, and others are gearing up for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) apprentice program in 2025. I sincerely thank Alicia Booker, Chaquita Barnett, and Ron Sapp for inviting me to be the keynote speaker at this memorable event. Your dedication to empowering our community through skills development is commendable. I can’t forget Mr. Mac. Special appreciation goes to Pittsburgh International Airport, Partner4Work Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation for their invaluable partnership in hosting this program at the construction site of our new terminal. It's not just training; it's an opportunity to be part of history in the making. To the graduates: Your hard work and determination have set you on a path to success. Embrace every challenge, and may your careers in the construction trades be filled with growth and fulfillment. 👏 Let's celebrate these achievements and continue supporting our future union workforce in the construction industry! #ConstructionTrades #WorkforceDevelopment #Apprenticeships #PIT2Work #BuildingOurFuture
The clean energy boom is already bringing back made-in-America manufacturing. Last week, Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation hosted an event where The Heinz Endowments and Climate Power brought together three clean manufacturing CEOs, Congresswoman Summer Lee, County Executive Sara Innamorato, and Mayor Ed Gainey at the Energy Innovation Center in Pittsburgh to discuss the growing sector in western Pennsylvania. CorePower Magnetics, Exus Renewables North America, and Vitro Architectural Glass, have deep roots in the region and, thanks to support from the Clean Energy Plan, are exploring new investments and expansions that could lead to over 1,500 new jobs in the coming years. These companies have committed to union labor for construction of their planned facilities and union neutrality on their shop floors. Pittsburgh Gateways has partnered with Clean Energy Center at Penn College (CEC) to co-develop a workforce development hub, training lab, and community engagement space in Homewood, set to open in early 2025. Karen Benner (pictured) joined Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation this spring as Director of Building Performance Programs to lead the partnership with Penn College, and to promote workforce development and training, contractor growth and apprenticeships, and community outreach and awareness. The mission of the CEC Pittsburgh is to teach how to reduce energy consumption in homes and communities, while also improving comfort and safety. Programs will focus on building performance training, providing in-demand skills and certifications for both residential renovations and new home construction careers. Karen has been working in the residential construction industry for over 25-years, earned professional accreditations in sustainability in 2009, and was named National Assocation of Home Builders’ Best-In-Green Young Professional of the Year in 2015. Pro tip: Be one of the last persons to leave a Green Building Alliance event and you’ll likely go home with fresh flowers. Had a joyful evening at The Assembly Pittsburgh (LEED-Gold) historical building, celebrating 2030 District successes, acknowledging the work ahead of us, and connecting with new and not-so-new friends on this journey. Especially grateful to be there this year representing Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation / Energy Innovation Center as a member of the largest 2030 District in the world. 🌱🌏🤩 https://lnkd.in/d8A76rAj
