The EPIC Stories Contest is a celebration of the aspiration, resilience and success of Entrepreneurial Households (EHs). It brings to light inspiring stories of economic growth that are happening all across India. Sushant Uniyal and his brother founded a novel business, which their hometown had never seen before. Their successful mushroom farming business provides employment to locals and has turned into a viable business model for others in their community to adopt. Despite working for a private company in a large city, Sushant decided to move back to his hometown, Garhwal in Uttrakhand to start his mushroom farming business. Today, they have the biggest oyster mushroom production unit in their town, producing 100 kgs of mushrooms a day. After seeing the success of the brothers, many others in the community have replicated the business. They are also affiliated with a governmental program that connects them with other farmers seeking insights and guidance on mushroom farming. Sushant’s innovative business is evidence of the opportunity for economic growth which is unfolding across India. This is the Economic Power of Industrious Communities (EPIC), a multi-trillion dollar opportunity for deploying commercial capital at scale. Build for EHs and grow with them. The EPIC Stories Contest is a celebration of the aspiration, resilience and success of Entrepreneurial Households (EHs). It brings to light inspiring stories of economic growth that are happening all across India. Mohit Runghe is a savvy, ambitious entrepreneur who started his business, Keshava Dairy Plant, to employ the local youth while also contributing to farmers’ income. His small business collects milk from nearby farmers, makes milk products, and delivers them to nearby homes. After completing his BSc., Mohit started working with an NGO where he learnt about the problem of youth unemployment. Post the death of his father, he found himself in a similar situation: looking for a job yet unable to find one. He created an opportunity for himself and many more like him. Within a year of operating Keshava Dairy Plant, he managed to double its workforce. Mohit’s business helps achieve economic growth for his household and to give back to the farming community he lives in.  Mohit’s story highlights a huge, untapped market opportunity to build formal institutions which can address the business needs of Entrepreneurial Households (EHs). This is the Economic Power of Industrious Communities (EPIC), a multi-trillion dollar opportunity for deploying commercial capital at scale. Build for EHs and grow with them. Its mission is to revolutionise snacks and snacking habits across India by providing millet-based, nutritious but still delicious, alternatives. 9Nutz is a prime example of an ambitious entrepreneur who saw a gap in their community and overcame multiple obstacles to solve it. Entrepreneurial Households (EHs), and the Industrious Communities they form, will be the drivers of the next big wave of economic growth. These households are full of ambition and aspiration and are ready to scale their growth into prosperity. Unfortunately, the world of capital has been lagging in its understanding of the true potential of this customer segment. Traditional metrics and decades-old narratives like the 'bottom of the pyramid' have led to a perception of this segment as fragile and risky. This perception has only served to push them to the fringes of mainstream capital; it has served as a roadblock to their social and financial mobility. Our goal at Enmasse is to challenge myths about these households through compelling, authentic stories, data, and insights & accelerate these households on their path to prosperity. Entrepreneurial Households are a real opportunity for the world of capital, as the EPIC Opportunity Report by Praxis Global Alliance has revealed. They are aspirational, resilient, intelligent and aware. Individuals like Amit, Renu, Manjula, Yogesh and Abhijit’s showcase that these households are entrepreneurial, economically vibrant, and punch above their weight in every sphere of life. These characteristics are exactly what makes this segment ready for investment; these are what make Entrepreneurial Households an EPIC Opportunity. This is the Economic Power of Industrious Communities (EPIC), a multi-trillion dollar opportunity for deploying commercial capital at scale. Build for EHs and grow with them. Over the last four weeks, we have busted numerous myths surrounding Entrepreneurial Households (EHs). Yet, one remains: Entrepreneurial Households are constrained by their means, and therefore not worthy of investment. The reality is quite the contrary. Entrepreneurial Households punch above their weight in every facet of their life. They are ambitious and aspirational, and do not let socio-economic obstacles prevent them from achieving financial and social mobility. Entrepreneurial Households are adept at leveraging every asset at their disposal in their pursuit of growth.  When Renu, who we introduced you to before, didn’t have enough capital to start her store, she secured a loan of 30,000 rupees from her brother for initial inventory. She later turned to her savings and continued to invest in her business. Over time she established credit relationships with wholesalers and traders. Not having enough start-up capital of her own didn’t hamper Renu’s determination. This attitude exemplifies how Entrepreneurial Households dream well beyond their means and act to make them a reality. It also highlights the opportunity to lend to these households and help them scale their already successful businesses. This is the Economic Power of Industrious Communities (EPIC), a multi-trillion dollar opportunity for deploying commercial capital at scale. Build for EHs and grow with them. A common thread across our Mythbusters series is the perception that households in India’s smaller towns and cities lack agency. Two decades of Elevar Equity's experience shows us that such Entrepreneurial Households are full of entrepreneurial spirit. They constantly balance multiple incomes and leverage their assets and carefully curated borrowings to grow and meet their aspirations. Many have an aspiration to contribute positively to their communities and leave behind a legacy. This entrepreneurial spirit is evident in Amit’s story. After serving in the army, Amit was all set to receive a regular pension income; but he wanted to prosper and catalyse growth for his family and community. Having had to travel 12 km to the nearest gym, he identified a gap in the market, and opened his own gym in the village, creating a successful business from scratch. He now has two sources of income, as well as supplementary revenue from agricultural activities. Amit also saw the social pitfalls of the youth being unengaged. Wanting to make a positive change in their lives, he started training young people in his gym to keep them on the right track. He currently trains dozens of people in his gym. Amit’s journey highlights his vision, aspiration and risk-taking ability; all the marks of an entrepreneur. There are many more Entrepreneurial Households like Amit's, and therein lies the EPIC Opportunity for businesses and investors to meet their demands. This is the Economic Power of Industrious Communities (EPIC), a multi-trillion dollar opportunity for deploying commercial capital at scale. Build for EHs and grow with them.
