ECS builds an active, engaged, & thoughtful citizenry—We Grow Citizens
About us
ECS offers an educational experience that develops students into critical thinkers, thoughtful innovators, and well-rounded scholars. We provide students the tools and educational foundation to become tomorrow’s global citizens. We don’t just teach; we strive to show students how their choices impact the world around them. We value curriculum and culture equally. Most schools have tunnel vision when it comes to program --it all revolves around curriculum choices. Without a strong culture, however, even the best curricular programs will fail. ECS partners authentic culture development with the educational experience. Culture is the foundation for all the work we do. We are rethinking what school “looks like.” We design spaces with students and educators, and create environments that reflect beauty, support health and wellness, and inspire creativity and engagement. We are reinventing the profession. ECS educators are facilitators, collaborators, and creative geniuses. Instead of teaching to the test, ECS educators connect with students where they are, and inspire students to be extraordinary citizens of the world. Along the way, ECS educators are changing the conversation about what it means to be a practitioner of education, and blazing the trail for a new excellence in the profession. Our measures of success support the development of the whole child. ECS knows that children are not defined by a number, or a word (would you want to be labeled “basic?”). In fact, we are working to measure the various ways that students thrive in a learning environment. Our educators are developing ways to gather data around student growth in academic areas, thinking and synthesizing, and socio-emotional. ECS maintains the strong belief that ALL children can THRIVE.

It was an honor to have Zetta Elliott and Noa Denmon speak to our ECS students and families last evening at our A Night for the Books Event! 📚 The award-winning author and illustrator duo of A Place Inside of Me discussed their background in their respective fields and the importance of diversity in literature and media, answered student questions during an interactive Q&A, and personalized signed copies of A Place Inside of Me for Intermediate School ECSers. Thank you again for joining us and empowering our students through literacy and art Ms. Elliott and Ms. Denmon! 📖🎨 We'd also like to thank Kate's Kid Book Bash and Books Bridge Hope for making this event possible!

“This menu has been so great for the kids and I appreciate how diverse and healthy it is. I never thought I would see my kids excited about anything not called ‘breakfast for lunch day.’” — Jocelyn, Intermediate School Parent Last week, Community Kitchen Pittsburgh joined our intermediate school lunches for a Pasta Primavera tasting🍽️ Students loved trying this new tasty dish — some students even asked for seconds and thirds! After such a great tasting event with Chef Bruce, many of our intermediate school ECSers were excited to have Pasta Primavera for lunch today. A huge thank you to CKP for always providing our students healthy and delicious breakfast and lunch. 👨🏿🍳👩🏻🍳 #GrowingCitizens

Environmental Charter School reposted this
I am very excited to be part of this project and to announce that we have not only 1 but 2 schools in the Pittsburgh area that will be participating in this national recycling contest. Environmental Charter School and Mendon Elementary School will both be participating in Jessica Alexanderson's amazing 2 Million Cans Recycling Contest! One of my awesome suppliers, Mon-Valley Recycling Center is the participating scrap yard for both schools, too! I can't wait for the students to learn about recycling metal and get the opportunity to receive Jessica's awesome book, "The Girl Who Recycled 1 Million Cans!" Tune back in when the contest starts in October, but in the mean time, if you're local, please start saving your aluminum cans and bring them to one of our participating schools. Also, a special thank you two our sponsors for each school, PPG and Sherwin-Williams!

Nida Wilson, ECS Partnerships and Programs Coordinator, spent 7 days in Costa Rica this summer with Ecology Project International. She took part in an educator professional development course to explore strategies and tools to inspire students to observe, question, make claims, and conduct independent scientific research using the NGSS framework and the 5E Model of Instruction. The course took place at the Pacuare Reserve on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Nida connected with other educators from across the country and participated in sea turtle conservation research, conducting nightly turtle censuses and data collection on newly hatched Leatherback sea turtles.
