Today marks National Disability Independence Day, which celebrates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. We’re proud to support the ADA’s 34th anniversary. This important civil rights law works to ensure that all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, and it guides our work at Envision Unlimited every day. “I have been riding since I was a kid. Now I’m riding bikes all the time,” Envision Unlimited member Trevell told the Chicago Sun-Times. Our members had a wonderful day cycling and celebrating with cyclists from Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity’s The Ability Experience during the Journey of Hope Friendship Visit Ride Along! Some riders biked all the way from Skokie to our Westtown Center, promoting the benefits of cycling for people with disabilities. Thanks to reporter Kaitlin Washburn for the story! July is Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize the history, achievements, experiences and struggles in the disability community. To celebrate, our members participated in Chicago’s 21st annual Disability Pride Parade over the weekend. This year’s theme was “disability pride will not be denied,” and our members made a colorful statement with their tie-dye shirts, leis and grass skirts. One member from our Nashville Center even said, “I want to be part of this every year.” #EnvisionProud #disabilitypride #disabilitypridemonth #peoplewithdisabilities #inclusionmatters #disabilityawareness #chicagoevents

We offer internships through our mental health, art therapy and community day programs for students pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as certificate programs. Individuals will receive experience at one of our seven community day centers or our Ravenswood Center, the hub of our mental health services. “I spent my first-year internship helping on the developmental disability side of the organization with the sex education program,” said clinical social work intern Katie Feyh. “It was such a positive experience that I chose to stay with Envision Unlimited this year to work in outpatient therapy on the Mental Health side.” Applicants should demonstrate an interest in working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in community day programs and/or clients with mental health conditions. Everyone deserves to have accessible, attainable and welcoming experiences in nature. July is #DisabilityPrideMonth, which honors the Americans with Disabilities Act that went into effect on July 26, 1990. To honor the history, achievements, experiences and struggles of the disability community, we encourage you to learn about and support organizations and communities leading the way in creating safe and accessible outdoor spaces and experiences for folks with disabilities in Illinois and across the country all year-round. 🌱 Envision Unlimited is a Chicago-based nonprofit founded in 1948 that serves people with intellectual, developmental and psychiatric disabilities with quality services and programs across Chicagoland and central Illinois, including environmental stewardship and outdoor activities like cycling, kayaking, gardening and more. 🧗🏿♀️Adaptive Climbing Group is a nonprofit that provides affordable and accessible climbing experiences for individuals with disabilities. They launched their third chapter in Chicago back in 2015 and now has a thriving community in the city that facilitates weekly indoor climbing and monthly youth sessions at Brooklyn Boulders. 🐦⬛ Birdability is a nonprofit with a mission to share the joys of birding with people who have disabilities and ensure birding is accessible to every body through education, outreach and advocacy. They are currently seeking folks to contribute to their blog, so check them out! Looking to get outside of Illinois? Here are some additional organizations to check out: 🥾 Disabled Hikers is a cross-disability-led nonprofit based in the Pacific Northwest building disability community and justice in the outdoors. 🌍 Wildability is a nonprofit creating opportunities for disabled youth to create change and become leaders in the climate movement. 🐦 Access Birding provides consulting and training services to empower nature organizations to improve access and inclusion for disabled birders.
