More than 70% of Americans believe that they have never met someone who is transgender. Meet Chrissy. She drives cars, picks up groceries, and falls in love just like everyone else. In her own poignant words she says, “You actually just get one life, so you should be able to be yourself without hiding yourself.” Equality Michigan is working to center transgender people and their families to share their heart-felt stories about what’s at stake for trans Americans right now, and how everyone can help to accelerate acceptance. The statewide anti-violence and advocacy organization proudly serving Michigan's LGBTQ+ and HIV affected communities.
About us
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) citizens and citizens affected by HIV experience a Michigan in which they lack the opportunity and legal protections afforded to most. In our state, it is still legal to fire or evict someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We’re working to update state law so that Michigan treats LGBTQ people, people affected by HIV, and their families fairly. Our staff consistently monitors lawmakers to ensure that pro-equality policies are supported and adopted. We work on these policy issues day in and day out: • Discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations • Safe Schools • Parenting and Adoption • Immigration Equality • Marriage • Hate Crimes • HIV/AIDS Get involved, learn more about the issues, report discrimination, and stand up for equality at our website: equalitymi.org

More than 70% of Americans believe that they have never met someone who is transgender. Meet Syd, a Kalamazoo student and singer who loves everything about music. His mom is a wonderful ally and had this to say about supporting Syd through his journey: “It was something very unfamiliar to me. Over time, we have been able to learn and grow together. Being transgender is absolutely a real thing and I could not be more proud to be Syd's mom.” Equality Michigan is working to center transgender people and their families to share their heart-felt stories about what’s at stake for trans Americans right now, and how everyone can help to accelerate acceptance.
