We are pleased to share our latest work, "European QUantum ecOsystems — Preparing the Industry for the Quantum Security and Communications Revolution" (Noel Farrugia et al). This paper outlines the efforts being made towards integrating quantum key distribution (QKD) into existing telecommunications infrastructure as part of the EuroQCI initiative. Our research highlights the urgency of preparing for the cybersecurity challenges posed by quantum computing, which threatens current encryption methods. We detail the EQUO project's role in advancing QKD technology through practical demonstrations in Tel Aviv and Turin. These use cases illustrate the feasibility of deploying QKD in metropolitan networks, ensuring secure data transmission for critical infrastructure. The paper also addresses the need for standardization in QKD protocols, a key factor for its widespread adoption. By bridging these gaps, we aim to pave the way for a quantum-secure future in Europe.

Telecommunications
Leveraging quantum communications for cybersecurity and resilience in Europe.
About us
Quantum-security communications are more mature today as they rely on systems such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The main scope of EQUO is design, develop and test mature QKD nodes and networks, based on hardware and software technologies developed in Europe, ready for integration in telecommunication networks, both for metro and long-distance production scenarios. At this aim, a great effort will be put on developing hardware quantum components stable and performant enough to allow efficient integration in QKD systems and software planes for management control and orchestration of QKD networks.

Members of the EQUO project contributed to the Quantum Safe Cryptography Conference held in Singapore from the 14th to 16th of May 2024, organised by ETSI and Institute for Quantum Computing. In recognition of the recent progress toward a cryptographically relevant quantum computer and the need to prepare for a transition to quantum secure technologies, the conference focused on worldwide standardization efforts. Representatives from companies, governments, and the academic community gathered to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration about cutting-edge cryptographic solutions coming out of business and recent research activities. On the 15th of May, Davide Bacco, CTO at EQUO project’s partner QTI SRL, contributed to the conference session dedicated to QKD networks, presenting the latest implementations realised in Italy and neighbouring countries to both improve current quantum technology and integrate commercial QKD systems in standard telecommunication networks.

Breakthrough in Quantum Internet Technology: Secure Transmission Achieved! Harvard University researchers, led by Mikhail Lukin, have made a significant leap in quantum communication. They've successfully demonstrated a secure quantum internet connection over 50 km in Boston using entangled particles of light. This pioneering work, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), showcases the potential of quantum entanglement and marks a crucial step toward the future of quantum internet.

Microsoft-Funded Quantum Startup Plants Flags in Europe https://lnkd.in/dbYy4JAt Quantum startup Photonic Inc. raised roughly US$100 million (roughly €92 million) in venture funds late last year to scale up its silicon-based optical quantum computing architecture, bringing total VC investment in the company thus far to US$140 million. The startup’s approach photonically links spin qubits, manufactured on silicon chips, to form a scalable architecture that can support quantum networks over telecom wavelengths. Critically, key investor and new collaborator Microsoft is keen to combine these unconventional qubits and chips with its cloud computing platform, Azure, to deliver scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computers and networks.

🔍 Evaluation of Quantum and Hybrid Solvers for Combinatorial Optimization 🌟 In this recent study (outside EQUO, but very relevant for Quantum), we've meticulously evaluated D-Wave quantum and hybrid solvers, aiming to uncover their potential for real-world applications, such as energy optimization in data centers. 🧩 We've also compared both these solvers with the classical solver CPLEX, renowned for its efficiency. 🚀 Our goal? To showcase the unparalleled performance capabilities of D-Wave solvers and their potential in solving complex optimization problems. Our findings shed light on the promising future of quantum computing. 💡 #QuantumComputing #Optimization #DWaveSystems #Research #Innovation
