As we enter the peak of hurricane season, the State Climate Office of North Carolina published an article looking back on Hurricane Dorian. ESP was proud to support NCDOT to develop and refine lifesaving, real-time flood warning tools that guide preparation for and response to storm events. After hard lessons learned from Hurricanes Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018), NCDOT developed FIMAN-T (Flood Inundation Mapping & Alert Network for Transportation), a web-based tool that provides visualization and metrics for real-time and forecasted flood inundation depths along roads, bridges, and other NCDOT assets. In 2019, the beta version of this new tool used during Hurricane Dorian was so successful it led to the development of other tools, like T-SAPP (Transportation Surge Analysis Prediction Program) for hurricane and tropical storm surges. With each storm season, these tools are further refined and continually prove their effectiveness to help predict flood risk and minimize potential harm.
