Shoutout to ACERTUS’s Kate Benton, Carvana’s Tony Hall, and Vitu’s John Brueggeman for discussing the current state of title and registration modernization and how eSTART Coalition is emerging to play a role in advocating for modernization and connecting thought leaders for collaboration and information sharing at ARA - Automotive Remarketing Alliance’s Summer Roundtable.

Last Month, Car Dealership Guy featured Bernie Moreno on its podcast. Bernie is currently a candidate for the U.S. Senate for Ohio. Why’s this of interest, you ask? Well, Bernie is also the cofounder of eSTART Coalition member, CHAMP Titles. Catch Bernie talk about his time with Champ about 12 minutes into the interview.

On August 9, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill (SB) 898 into law. The bill, in part, requires any transfer of ownership reflecting an owner's address as being in Illinois to occur in Illinois. The bill also specifies that an Illinois dealer may "under no circumstance" obtain an out-of-state title for a vehicle held for sale in Illinois. Further, the bill specifies that an out-of-state title reflecting an Illinois address for the owner cannot be used to transfer ownership of the vehicle except if the transfer is to/from an lienholder or insurance company. In simpler terms, this bill appears to prohibit or limit the utilization of the "clearinghouse" models/systems which have emerged in other states (i.e. Montana and West Virginia) by Illinois dealers and other businesses.

The ARA - Automotive Remarketing Alliance (an eSTART Coalition member) is featuring a couple of discussions with fellow eSTART members about the coalition and our efforts during their 2024 Summer Roundtable next week in Frisco, Texas. Several eSTART Coalition members have attendees that are registered. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from John Brueggeman (Vitu), Kate Benton (ACERTUS), and Tony Hall (Carvana/ADESA) about eSTART and title/registration modernization efforts.

West Virginia continues to make strides: A digital title that facilitates the first steps towards interstate e-titling by facilitating an on-demand print of the digital title. Great collaboration amongst eSTART Coalition members CHAMP Titles, Tyler Technologies, IAA, and DDI Technology in partnership with West Virginia DMV.

Automotive fleets can use digital titling as a transformative tool for success. Traditionally, paper titles have determined how fast (or slow!) vehicles could be acquired, a process which sometimes took up to 60 days! Now, with the National Digital Titling Clearinghouse (NDTC), fleet operators can obtain an authentic, fully digital title in just a few hours.
