EU-MORE project aims to accelerate the early replacement of old inefficent electric motors in industry & tertiary sector

About us

EU-MORE is an acronym for EUropean MOtor REnovation initiative, awarded within the EU LIFE programme and funded under the LIFE-2021-CET-POLICY grant agreement N° 101076631. The 30-month programme (runtime Oct 2022 to end of March 2025) aims to capture the benefits of accelerating the replacement rate of old, inefficient motors through the development of new policies. The initiative will develop the appropriate tools for policy impact projection, monitoring and evaluation. It will also promote knowledge exchange between energy efficiency policy actors at Member State, European and international level.     EU-MORE is an acronym for EUropean MOtor REnovation initiative. This LIFE-Project targets an early replacement of old electric motors that remain in service in industry and in the tertiary sector. Electric motors have long lifetimes (30-40 year), which means that their replacement rate is slow. As a result of these excessive lifetimes, the actual savings of energy efficiency regulations are lower than the projections calculated by the impact assessments. By taking swift action, at least part of this lost savings potential could be recuperated, with all the associated benefits.     Last week during the International Copper Association Europe's #MotorsAcademy, I had the chance to talk about key success factors of a financial incentive programme for electric motor systems. Key takeaways: 1. According to our evaluation, the Swiss competitive tenders have come close to reaping the savings potential available within the framework of the programme for electric motor systems to industrial end-users. Due to the design of the programme (cost-effectiveness of measures being the main criteria for programme funding) and different programme requirements concerning budget and share of expenditures/subsidy, these were more the low hanging fruits. 2. There are different key factors influencing programme success: a) Contact to programme participants. In Switzerland, this happened through different channels, e.g. technical partners (installers, manufacturers, vendors, service companies), an existing network of technical consultants, or an existing network of industrial clients. b) Awareness within target group. Programmes need time for their rollout, therefore programme duration also plays a role in success. Longer time horizons can be favourable for upfront investments, such as programme communication. c) Easy participation. Keep the administrative burden of participation as low as possible, including application and monitoring of implemented measures. Programme participants valued a simple and easy-to-understand subsidy scheme, e.g. x% of investment cost, that can be determined and communicated clearly. d) Tangible subsidy. Programme participants found a subsidy of 20% - 30% of the investment cost "high enough". This significantly improves return on investment and facilitates the willingness to accept the administrative burden of participation. e) Qualification of involved consultants. This is an absolute must to be able to spot potentials for improvement and implement these. The comprehensive analysis of the EU-MORE project of policies for motor replacement across Europe has shown, that energy audits often fail to identify motor optimisation measures. 3. Our study team recommended the following building blocks for a successful programme: #1 Subsidy programme for electric motor systems #2 Utility programme #3 Innovation programme #4 Accompanying measures (training, communication, tools). We believe that #4 is a must, no matter whether just one or all other building blocks are implemented. 4. Switzerland decided to go ahead with energy efficiency obligations for electricity suppliers from 2025. Curious to see how this unfolds!     We are eager to hear your oppinon on - space constraints for motor replacement in industry... Replacing an old electric motor by a new, high-efficient one is an investment with a high internal rate of return. But sometimes, the bigger size of the high-efficiency motor will not fit into the existing production line in which it must be integrated and exchanging the entire production line would undo the financial benefit. This can particularly be the case for smaller motors integrated into a production line. ▶️ Is this a known issue for you? Do you have many motors with space constraints on your premises? ▶️ Can a switch to other motor types, such as the copper rotor induction motor (for fixed speed applications), and the synchronous reluctance motor or the permanent magnet motor (for variable speed applications), provide a solution? ▶️If not, what is the main barrier? please register on our EU-MORE website forum to be part of this important discussion ! 👉 https://lnkd.in/e8YmPXwV

    We are eager to hear your oppinon on - repair vs replace an old standard motor... Through some interviews in the context of EU-MORE, we heard the rule-of-thumb that, for standard frame size motors above 45 kW that are failing, a motor rewind / repair is only considered when the cost does not exceed 60%-70% of the price for a new motor (with a higher energy efficiency, usually).     In variable speed applications, synchronous motors tend to be the preferred technology. They are inherently free of rotor losses, which facilitated the development of models reaching the Ultra-Premium Efficiency level (IE5).  This motor category is expected to see major technology changes soon. Innovative low-cost Synchronous Reluctance motors (SynRMs) offer IE5 efficiency at reduced cost, for use in variable speed applications such as pumps, fans or compressors. For applications requiring high torque or a highly dynamic performance, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) offer the best torque-to-weight ratio and are available at IE5 efficiency. These motors can be used in a direct drive set-up, avoiding the losses of a gearbox. Applications include the motion control of cranes and cooling tower fans, among others.     We are eager to hear your oppinon on - replacement of old motors creates more demand... The EU-MORE project promotes policy measures to trigger the anticipated replacement of old electric motors in industry & tertiary sector before they fail. In principle, the additional demand for new highly efficient motors resulting from this should be beneficial for EU motor manufacturers.     We are eager to hear your opinion on - System optimization is key... Replacing old, inefficient electric motors (IE0 or IE1 efficiency classes) by state-of-the-art highly efficient new motors (IE4 or IE5) can bring immediate energy savings of around 10% or more. If the entire motor system is analysed and a holistic approach to motor replacement and optimization is taken, the energy savings can be even higher and the pay-back period very short, making the investment highly attractive: ▶️ Should every motor replacement be coupled to an analysis and optimisation of the entire motor system? ▶️ How frequently should a motor system be analysed for optimization? Every ____ year? ▶️ What is the main knowledge gap regarding the benefit of motor system optimisation?
