EuroGO-SHIP Project

The provision of new and continuous high-quality hydrographic data to help scientists in their predictions of dynamic ocean changes and assessments of weather patterns changes, the climate status, and the vitality of European marine ecosystems is essential for safeguarding the health of the ocean and the marine life within, as well as living conditions on land. Established in 1995, the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme is one of the longest running Atlantic Ocean colour monitoring field campaigns. Through its long-term, multidisciplinary approach to oceanographic research, the AMT programme has made significant contributions to the fields of Earth Observation, climate change research, and environmental policy. The AMT field programme is a true aspiration for EuroGO-SHIP and its aim to bring together the infrastructure needed for the systematic observing of European marine waters and seas. Recently, EuroGO-SHIP Project colleague Angelina Smilenova met with Dawn Ashby and Jennifer Lockett of Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) to discuss the AMT programme and a BLOG was BORN! The EuroGO-SHIP second annual meeting wrapped up today on an inspiring note after vigorous digests on research & results, lively brainstorms on service models, messages from colleagues at sea and impassioned planning to forge paths toward meaningful impact. Those in Venice are heading home with purposeful motivation to deliver a new RI proposal to enhance ocean observation in support of the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2050" and the wider objectives of the Green Deal. The EuroGO-SHIP tribe gathering in Venice today for the project’s 2nd Annual Meeting. Excellent updates on the progress made toward piloting best practice methods, streamlining FAIR data flow, and understanding the needs of regional hydrography communities through broad consultations. Some of the areas we discussed today include: · The importance of gaining a clear picture of all ship-based hydrography activity being conducted in Europe. · The need for an ongoing focus on piloting best practices for the ship-based hydrography community beyond the project's timeline. · Assessing statistical features of trend detection to increase understanding of ocean properties. · Developing useful software apps for running quality control in ship-board labs. ·  The benefits of working side-by-side when conducting sample comparison analyses versus comparing documents. ·  The importance of surveying and following up with end-users to firmly establish ongoing links. The Second Annual EuroGO-SHIP event is off to a great start with an excellent workshop yesterday with members of the Black Sea Observing community in the fabulous setting of Venice, Italy at our partner Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche facility. A key step in EuroGO-SHIP's aim to shape a new Research Infrastructure is to discuss and understand the needs of ship-based hydrographers observing the ocean in European waters. The workshop, a continuation of one that took place last year, brought many important requirements to light which will contribute toward an effective new suite of services to streamline the delivery of crucial data in support of the EU Green Deal. How can EuroGO-SHIP increase the quality, traceability, and availability of hydrographic data? By addressing gaps in facilities, testing best practices and shaping new services! Measurements of parameters like ocean salinity and velocity, dissolved oxygen and inorganic carbon, inorganic nutrients and transient tracers throughout the water column are essential for understanding the ocean’s role in local and global climate and ecosystems. Society’s need for hydrographic data is growing! Currently many observations are made on a nation-by-nation or even institution-by institution basis, producing data of variable quality in a fragmented way. The aim of EuroGO-SHIP demonstrate the principles and operations of a European RI for hydrography through pilot activities, including demonstrations of sharing knowledge and equipment, organising and comparing data, and contributing to updated best practices among the project partners. Salinity was one of the parameters used to demonstrate several of these aspects because it is both one of the key variables for characterising both physical and chemical properties of seawater, and a variable where equipment, training, and methodology used in its measurement vary widely. There is a need to update best practices for salinity sampling and analysis including uncertainty, and to apply them to ensure the quality and comparability of salinity data across different regions and time periods.
