ICOS - Integrated Carbon Observation System
Research Services
Standardised greenhouse gas measurements throughout Europe.
About us
Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) is a pan-European Research Infrastructure of twelve member countries and over 100 greenhouse gases measuring stations aimed at quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas balance of Europe and neighbouring regions. ICOS stations measure greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and fluxes over the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The ICOS stations are run and funded by national funding agencies, institutes and universities, demonstrating an impressive joint effort to enable climate change research.

Hello from the Hegyhátsál ICOS Atmosphere station in Hungary! This station is the first and currently the only station in ICOS Hungary. It measures greenhouse gases in a region covered by fields and forests. Climate change is evident in this region. In the 30 years of measurements, average temperatures have increased by 1.5°C. Data shows that high atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations on summer nights are increasing faster than the general atmospheric concentrations. This is presumably caused by the warmer summer nights and higher ecological respiration. The station was established in 1993 by Dr. László Haszpra, who has been running the station since then. In 2020, the station became part of ICOS. "I set up the station 30 years ago, and soon I am going to retire. I am trying to pass my knowledge to the younger generation, who can continue my work." The Hegyhátsál station also provides a sanctuary for communities of swallows, which nest within the tower's structures, their nests reaching heights of up to 82 meters. As the station operates primarily automatically with minimal human presence, the birds enjoy a tranquil environment for nesting.
