For years, I was battling Castleman Disease, in and out of the ICU, barely hanging on. I’d walk past the CVS near my house over and over again, never realizing that inside, on one of those shelves, was a bottle of sirolimus—the drug that would eventually save my life. It had been sitting there all along, approved for kidney transplant rejection, helping people all over the world, but I didn’t know it could help me too. For the last ten years, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this. How many more drugs are sitting on pharmacy shelves right now, waiting to be discovered as life-saving treatments for other diseases?
