We are proud to be honoring three community leaders with this year's Legacy Award: Marisol Resendez, Mercedes Bristol, and Ruben Garcia. Each honoree has made remarkable contributions towards a more equitable state in their respective fields and communities. Marisol Resendez has been a noteworthy leader in the health care space for over 18 years. As the executive director at El Milagro Clinic, Resendez is a key player in providing the Rio Grande Valley’s uninsured population with access to life-saving, comprehensive health care. Mercedes Bristol founded and serves as executive director of Texas Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. She is a leading advocate for greater kinship resources and communication at all levels of government. Ruben Garcia is the director of Annunciation House, a nonprofit shelter system that has welcomed migrants and refugees arriving in El Paso, Texas, with food, shelter, and social assistance for nearly 50 years. Join us in celebrating these leaders on Oct. 29 at the Austin Central Library. Details at https://lnkd.in/dxTmXDas

The state budget should work for all of us — no exceptions. While Texas boasts one of the largest economies in the nation, working families struggle to make ends meet and critical goods and services are consistently underfunded. In January, the Legislature will write the state budget for the next 2 years. Let’s ensure it represents every Texan and invests in our state’s greatest resource: our people. Sign up for our Point of Order newsletter for updates to help take back our budget: https://lnkd.in/gHEWqD2A

I'm excited to get this out into the world! ⭐️ Kaitlan Wong and I present the history, nuances, and geography of Texas' Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population. 💻 Scroll through our ESRI StoryMap linked below (probably best-viewed on your desktop/the "big internet" for us millennials). 🗺️ We had a lot of fun scrollytelling and using Flourish. You can scroll through a guided tour of where AAPI Texans live in our largest metro areas, or zoom in on your own community. 📢 We highlight the very cool new civic engagement report from Asian Texans for Justice 📊 And we stress the importance of data disaggregation in policy decisions. We provide links to best practices from Urban Institute, and we mention other groups doing this work such as AAPI Data, Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum cc: Coda Rayo-Garza, & Every Texan
