"Corporate development is really looking at how you can best both monetize your assets and grow your pipeline. So it's really about your bottom line, your ultimate bottom line... But how do you get there? Do you need to bring things in? Do you need to do some out-licensing? Do you do some collaborations?" In Part 3 of The Biotech Startups Podcast conversation with Bonum Therapeutics Chief Business Officer, Neela Patel, we dive deep into the world of corporate development and its crucial role in biotech success. In this episode, we cover: – The transition from Genentech to Poniard Pharmaceuticals and raising $37 million in Series A financing – Developing pipeline strategy and managing multiple research programs with limited resources – The challenges and opportunities of working in search and evaluation at Abbott and AbbVie – Creating a "democracy of ideas" to foster innovation and external collaboration in large pharma companies – Key factors for startups to consider when seeking partnerships or acquisitions with big pharma This episode is packed with invaluable insights for both startup founders and corporate development professionals in the biotech industry. Saying “no” is a powerful thing. In difficult conversations, saying “no” and showing that you’re willing to walk away often brings the other party back to the table… Or it shows that there really isn’t a path forward. Either way is a great result. When you’re prioritizing your workload, saying “no” allows you to give your best to the projects that really need you. That’s a win for everyone involved. Saying “no” is often an important skill for protecting your own mental health. That’s another win for everyone around you – both at work and at home. Even when it felt hard to say. I'm not recommending anyone use “no” as a power play – but being very clear on what you can and cannot do (or what you will and will not do) is an important skill. Something I think we should prioritize teaching our up-and-comers. #leadership #biotechnology #lifesciences

There’s so many things in business that you just need to learn by doing. For example – there’s no way to feel less awkward having awkward conversations… Until you’ve gotten in the reps to have the confidence in yourself to do it. Having scripts and guidance from mentors helps. Practicing what you’re going to say helps. Role-playing helps. But you don’t really start to get the confidence in doing the thing until *you* have actually done it a couple (or a couple dozen) times. Sales calls are like that. Negotiations are like that. Handling tricky customer service issues is like that. Performance conversations are like that. The good news is that no one lands on earth being excellent at these things. One way or another, they get the practice and build the skills. And you can too. Something to remember if you’re hiring young talent or if you ARE the young talent. #lifesciences #biotechnology #startups

"Be mindful that you have to have a way to talk about how you're differentiated. And it can't just be that, 'Oh, I think that I'll be able to dose twice a day instead of three times a day.' Like maybe... but that's really not moving the needle for the patients." In Part 3 of my conversation with Neela Patel, Chief Business Officer at Bonum Therapeutics, on The Biotech Startups Podcast, we dive deep into the critical importance of true differentiation in biotech innovation and business development. Here are some highlights from our conversation: –  The evolution of Neela's role from research to business development at Abbott and AbbVie, and the valuable lessons learned along the way 🔬 –  Insights into corporate development in mid-size biotech companies and the challenges of competing with larger firms for deals 💼 –  The importance of out-licensing and revenue generation for early-stage biotech companies to maintain control and fund growth 🚀 –  Strategies for biotech startups to diversify their revenue streams and increase resilience in a volatile market 💡 –  The crucial need for startups to articulate their differentiation clearly, focusing on significant improvements for patients rather than incremental changes 🗣️ What an episode! It's absolutely packed with invaluable insights for anyone in the biotech space, from startup founders to corporate development professionals!
