"To understand memory, or any study, usually it's best to spend more of your time on the extreme edges of it." In Part 2 of The Biotech Startups Podcast conversation with former founder and CEO of Genetic Leap (who just formed a $409M research partnership with Eli Lilly and Company) and current CEO of Ecotone AI, eMalick Njie, Ph.D, we explore the power of focusing on extremes to gain deeper insights into complex scientific phenomena. In this episode we cover: – The cultural shift and personal growth experienced in moving from Boston to Florida for his PhD studies – His research focus on Alzheimer's disease as an extreme edge of memory studies – The freedom and trust given by his mentors to shape and execute his own research ideas – The critical role of microglial cells in Alzheimer's disease and the importance of studying support cells in neurodegenerative disorders – Pioneering work on stem cell-based therapies for Alzheimer's, foreshadowing modern CAR-T approaches This episode offers a fascinating look into the early days of Alzheimer's research and the value of exploring scientific extremes to drive breakthroughs. "Pre-pandemic I founded my first company, Genetic Intelligence, on the vision of using AI to create new medicines based on the genetic code. Happy to share that Genetic Intelligence (now Genetic Leap) has partnered with Eli Lilly to further this vision in a deal valued at 409M USD." eMalick Njie, Ph.D Couldn't be more proud or hopeful as my brilliant friend works to create a better healthcare future through AI with Ecotone. At the end of August, we announced $5M in equipment funding dedicated to Nucleate Alumni. Why? Because I’ve been there. I know how hard it is to raise money from traditional financial institutions as a relatively unknown entity. Finding the right sources of capital early on is important. It unlocks your ability to move faster, start research earlier, etc. So if I can help the next generation of founders get their start, even in a small way – that feels like a good investment to me. We’re also giving up to 3 months off equipment leases for Nucleate Alumni who choose to work with Excedr — something that could easily be $30K+ in cash savings. Nucleate is doing SO MUCH for the life sciences community, I’m beyond thrilled to be able to scale our support as well. Can’t wait to see what comes out of this next! #lifesciences #biotechnology #nucleate

How can we create a brand identity that pierces through our market’s defenses so they can hear – and maybe more importantly – feel the message? That’s a big question I asked myself as we were starting to think about our brand at Excedr. Even early on, we knew what WE stood for… But how could we communicate that in a way that could speak to the very different segments of the market we work with – both scientists and finance? The short answer was “through art.” Art is a way of tapping into the subconscious – ever noticed how so many walks of life can enjoy the same artist? A lot of my friends run design studios, are in hospitality, I played in a band …. So we started taking inspiration from those creative backgrounds and marrying them with the technical. When it came to designing the website, our marketing, and our visual identity as a whole, we took a lot of inspiration from design and layered the scientific and technical into that. The inspiration for The Biotech Startups Podcast came from my love of biographies and the observation that long-form, informal podcasts tend to bring people in. Most people don’t read like I do – and they’re missing out on all these great insights. The podcast is basically a Trojan Horse to ship mini-biographies of biotech execs to the people who could benefit most from hearing them. It’s created magic. This type of industry melding goes into everything we do at Excedr today. Brand identity, sales, marketing, even legal and finance. It’s technical rigor X humanities art and design, and it’s worked really well for us over the years. Just another reminder to keep your eyes open for inspiration everywhere. This kind of alchemy can really create something special if you’re open to it. #biotechnology #lifesciences #founder
