All convention centers world-wide were eligible to apply for EXHIBITOR Magazine's 2025 Centers of Excellence competition. Applicants were evaluated using a variety of criteria in five primary categories: Facility & Functionality, Location & Accommodations, Service & Execution, Expansions & Upgrades, and Honors & Awards. The evaluation also included a survey of event planners, show organizers, and exhibit managers who have recently hosted (or exhibited at) trade shows and events within each facility, as well as a review of entrants' event spaces, primary selling points, nearby attractions, and innovations, conducted by a panel of corporate exhibit managers. The 25 highest-scoring entries have earned the distinction of being named among EXHIBITOR Magazine's Centers of Excellence. Today we feature the first eight of these award winners! Senior Writer Charles Pappas, who we like to call the Indiana Jones of Event Marketing, has been traveling and sharing his adventures with us - he recently returned from his time in Paris and wanted to bring you along for the ride, since believe it or not, event marketing is all around us. Charles writes: Gauguin and Manet both used World Expos in Paris to launch themselves. But without a World Expo, there is no Monet at all. Up until the 1880s, the only water lily that could survive for any length of time in France was bland white. Then Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac began crossing-breeding the French ones with several from North America, resulting in lilies with a palette from yellow to red to fuchsia. The results were so astonishing, he displayed them next to the new Eiffel Tower at the 1889 World Expo. That's when Claude Monet wanders by the exhibit. The colors hit him like a lightning bolt. Once he finished building his pond in Giverny, Monet orders the water lilies from Latour-Marliac -when until the end of his life, he paints them in all their deep sensuous hues. (Photo #2 - credit to Wikimedia Commons) My favorite place to get a glimpse of this is L'Orangerie and Monet's paintings there of Nymphéas [Water Lilies), especially on a rainy day like today. You wonder at the beauty but you also wonder at the serendipity of walking by the right exhibit at the right time at the World's Fair. Visiting Barthelemy, the cheese shop where Catherine Deneuve shops. (And it's probably, with Laurent Dubois, the best cheese shop in Paris.) We asked for the strongest Roquefort possible, then headed to the Luxembourg Gardens for an impromptu lunch, passing through the filming of a movie or TV show outside the entrance gates. Why Roquefort? I love it of course but it really didn't become "Roquefort" until the Paris Expos, where it recreated the caves the cheese is aged in and became THE brand of blue cheese for the whole world. (Photos 3&4 - by Charles Pappas) Where will he head next? Will he stay in Paris? Stay tuned!
