Aloha from Oahu! Fair Food Network and its NTAE Nutrition Incentive Hub partners Center for Nutrition & Health Impact (formerly Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition) and University of California, San Francisco are gathering this week with a group of nearly 30 USDA #GusNIP produce prescription and nutrition incentive projects, representing 20 states plus Guam and Puerto Rico to learn from #GusNIP grantees in Hawai'i. Together, the group is experiencing how #GusNIP projects in Hawai’i’ are supporting local farmers, designed in partnership with community members and elders, and focus on providing culturally relevant programming that furthers community and individual health. This intensive week of learning is part of a series of events organized by the Nutrition Incentive Hub that helps connect #GusNIP grantees with new ideas and approaches to bring home to their communities. Exciting news! Our Double Up Food Bucks program in Michigan received a $5 million investment from the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development (MDARD) in the 2024-25 state budget. This new wave of funding will help ensure Michigan families can reliably afford to eat healthier food, while also benefitting farmers and food retailers. We are incredibly grateful to the Michigan Legislature, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and MDARD for this historic level of investment in our program. “We believe every family should be able to afford healthy and nutritious food,” said Kate Krauss, CEO at Fair Food Network. “This new support through the state’s budget will boost Double Up Food Bucks’ positive impact for Michigan farmers and families alike. Boring and other community leaders in our home state of Michigan held a recent roundtable to discuss the challenges and potential solutions within our state’s food system. Participants discussed the Department’s new Farm to Family program and called for additional investments, including $3 million to support our signature Double-Up Food Bucks program that helps families using SNAP access more locally grown fruits and vegetables while giving local farmers, food retailers, and local economies a boost. During #FarmersMarketWeek, we’re celebrating how important our local markets are for food access. According to the USDA, SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) usage at farmers markets has increased by 162 percent since 2017. And programs like our Double Up Food Bucks program help families using SNAP bring home even more locally grown fruits and vegetables while boosting opportunities for farmers and stimulating our local economies.
