At Families Rising, we recognize and value the insights that can only be gained by living through the child welfare system. Our community thrives on the collective wisdom of individuals who have firsthand navigated the foster care and adoption landscapes. We’re excited to announce “The Voices of Lived Expertise” – a four-part training series thoughtfully delivered by individuals who were adopted and/or spent time in foster or kinship care. Every child has a right to a permanent, loving family. For thousands of children in foster care each year, adoption helps achieve that. This National Adoption Month, we celebrate the adoptive families that embrace young people for who they are and allow them to feel proud of where they come from. This year’s theme "Honoring Youth: Strengthening Pathways for Lasting Bonds" emphasizes the importance of meaningful community connections and sense of identity for youth throughout their lives. Placing young people in foster care with families that understand and affirm their identity paves the way for long-term stability and well-being. Families Rising's Director of Training Barb Clark is finishing up her second day of FASD training in Massachusetts with MassFASD. The room was full, with even more folks tuning in virtually! 🌟 Barb is happy to say that we now have a whole new group of people who are more aware of FASD completing action plans for their organizations on how they can better serve this population.

This Indigenous People’s Day, Families Rising is honoring the rich cultures and inherent sovereignty of tribal nations while also reflecting on the long-lasting harms of colonialism and white supremacy. It is past time for all of us in the U.S. and Canada, and especially those of us in child welfare, to look closely at this difficult history, acknowledge the wrongs that were done, and recommit ourselves to addressing the racism and legacy of trauma still affecting Indigenous children and families today. We will continue our work to decolonize child welfare by uplifting Indigenous voices in the field of child welfare, providing education directly from experts in the field, and advancing current and emerging Tribal child welfare professionals to better represent the children they serve.
