At Families Rising, we recognize and value the insights that can only be gained by living through the child welfare system. Our community thrives on the collective wisdom of individuals who have firsthand navigated the foster care and adoption landscapes. We’re excited to announce “The Voices of Lived Expertise” – a four-part training series thoughtfully delivered by individuals who were adopted and/or spent time in foster or kinship care. This Indigenous People’s Day, Families Rising is honoring the rich cultures and inherent sovereignty of tribal nations while also reflecting on the long-lasting harms of colonialism and white supremacy. It is past time for all of us in the U.S. and Canada, and especially those of us in child welfare, to look closely at this difficult history, acknowledge the wrongs that were done, and recommit ourselves to addressing the racism and legacy of trauma still affecting Indigenous children and families today. We will continue our work to decolonize child welfare by uplifting Indigenous voices in the field of child welfare, providing education directly from experts in the field, and advancing current and emerging Tribal child welfare professionals to better represent the children they serve.

“So much of our work with children and families is extending grace to others, including our community partners. But that compassion you have for others, you also have to extend to yourself.” In this blog article, Families Rising’s Myca Jeter discusses how self-care is vital to showing up best as a child welfare professional: https://lnkd.in/g7FCjAqP

September was Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to advocate and educate in support of those living with FASDs and those who care for them. While FASDs affect all communities, due to high rates of screening within the child welfare system, studies show that 70% of children diagnosed with FASD are or have been in foster care. As such, the child welfare system plays a vital role in that support. FASDs and their effects belong in conversations about education, mental health, criminal justice, and more. Families Rising is proud to offer virtual training opportunities to help you feel better prepared to discuss FASDs. Learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/gCtbuv97
