Thriving kids. Thriving families.

About us

Research has shown that starting early and engaging parents in their child’s education is positively associated with a child’s academic, social and emotional well-being. That is why Family Connections has evolved into a family learning community in which underserved children and parents attend programs together, learn together and grow together, from birth into Kindergarten and beyond. Our programs and services are free so that all underserved families in our community, regardless of their circumstances, can participate. Our parent participation preschools provide enriching early learning experiences for birth-to-five year olds, resulting in children who arrive at kindergarten academically and socially ready to learn. After preschool, our Young Scholars program sustains positive family dynamics and learning opportunities for kindergarten and beyond so that participating students and their families have the tools and resources to become the drivers of their own success and leaders in their extended communities. Throughout the years, our parent leadership education and holistic family support systems help parents confidently and successfully embrace their role as their child’s first teacher, most influential role model and best advocate. Located in San Mateo County, Family Connections has been supporting Peninsula families since 1993. We currently operate in East Menlo Park and Redwood City, serving approximately 600 individuals per year.

A new study reveals that Child-Parent Psychotherapy can reduce the impact of trauma on cellular aging—a groundbreaking discovery marking the first biological benefit linked to this treatment. UCSF researchers looked at the effects of dyadic therapy on a biomarker they dubbed “age acceleration,” which tells how fast or slow a person’s body is aging compared to their chronological age. These results underscore the transformative work that Board Member Emeritus Alicia Lieberman and current ZTT Board Member Chandra Ghosh Ippen have undertaken in reshaping how we understand and treat early childhood and parental trauma. Head to https://bit.ly/3yQWlza for more by UCSF that offers valuable insights and context to this study.

From before they are born through their earliest years, babies and toddlers are developing neural connections at an extraordinary rate. These connections form the foundation for lifelong success. How are these neural connections created and strengthened? Through interactions with attentive caregivers who provide nurturing and responsive care: serve and return. Serve and return involves responsive interactions between babies and their caregivers. These interactions are crucial for helping children grow and reach their full potential. This National Parent's Day, we would like to celebrate you—the parents who create secure attachments that help shape the trajectory of a child's life.

💙 April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to protect our youngest and most vulnerable. It reminds us of our collective responsibility to foster nurturing environments for children. As we spotlight this crucial cause, it's essential to recognize the critical role caregivers play in early learning programs but also in prevention! Caregiver participation in early learning programs isn't just about academic preparation; it's a gateway to building stronger, more resilient communities. At Family Connections, caregiver participation provides a unique opportunity to engage with children in a safe, supportive setting, encouraging positive social interactions and the development of critical emotional skills. Moreover, caregiver participation programs provide a space for caregivers to connect, share experiences, and access resources, enhancing their ability to create safe and enriching environments for every child. It's about creating a connected community that looks out for one another, where a child's safety is everyone's priority. 💙
