Inspiring Students. Developing Teachers. Together, We Are Breakthrough.

About us

Breakthrough Collaborative pursues a dual mission to: 1. Increase academic opportunity for highly motivated, underserved students and get them into college ready to succeed; and 2. Inspire and develop the next generation of teachers and educational leaders. Our vision is to create an empowering educational experience that results in equitable access to higher education for our students and prepares our teaching fellows for education sector roles, enabling all of our students, teaching fellows, and instructional coaches to achieve their full potential as learners, teachers, leaders, and agents of change in their communities. Breakthrough has been improving educational outcomes for young people since 1978, with the establishment of a single site at University High School in San Francisco. Over the next 20 years, Breakthrough grew to a collective of independent sites across the country. Today, the Breakthrough national office located in Oakland, CA serves a collaborative network of 24 Breakthrough affiliates throughout the U.S. by providing program standards and resources including curricula, evaluation tools, and teaching fellow recruitment. Breakthrough affiliates carry out direct services to middle- and high school students from under-resourced communities, college undergraduates serve as teaching fellows, and professional teachers serve as instructional coaches in their localities.

This summer, Dennis Ugbaja, a social studies education major from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, brought his passion for teaching to Breakthrough Kent Denver. His experience working with seventh-grade students reaffirmed his commitment to education. Despite initial challenges like adjusting to new classroom management techniques and navigating cultural differences, Dennis was able to build meaningful connections with his students. Teaching African American history, he was able to cultivate curiosity and engagement, introducing students to the significance of HBCUs—something many of them had never encountered before. We're proud to have leaders like Dennis in the Breakthrough community! 💙💛 #BreakthroughTogether #FutureEducators #EducationalEquity

  • 📊 A recent report from TNTP reveals a staggering 31% representation gap in our classrooms—52% of U.S. students are people of color, but only 21% of teachers reflect that diversity. At Breakthrough, we’re proud to be part of the solution! With 79% of our Teaching Fellows identifying as people of color, we're directly addressing the need for a diverse educator workforce that mirrors our student population. Together, we’re shaping the future of education! 💡 Read more here: https://ow.ly/95Qg50THbWy #BreakthroughTogether #TeacherDiversity #EdEquity

  • Exciting news from Capitol Hill! Last week, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the Promoting Service through AmeriCorps Act (PSA Act) in both the Senate and the House. This bill, reauthorizing AmeriCorps programs through 2029, is a crucial step toward expanding opportunities for Americans to serve and strengthening pathways to education and employment. At Breakthrough, we are committed to building the next generation of education leaders and advocates. The PSA Act will support organizations like ours in bringing more AmeriCorps members into communities to increase educational access and opportunities. Reauthorizing AmeriCorps programs will support the expansion our Teaching Fellowship program, providing college students a viable path to the classroom and a solid foundation for success. Let’s celebrate this progress and thank the congressional champions who made it happen! #BreakthroughTogether #PSAAct #AmeriCorps

  • A recent report by the National Student Clearinghouse shows promising improvements in college enrollment rates among the class of 2022, particularly for underrepresented students. In fact, 56% of students from schools in underresourced communities enrolled in college within a year, up from 53.4% for the previous class. 🎓 At Breakthrough, we’re proud to see outcomes like these, which align with our mission to prepare students for college and life success. Our dynamic, student-centered model supports students—many of whom come from underrepresented backgrounds—on their path to higher education. Our commitment to equity and success doesn’t stop with enrollment. We’re ensuring that Breakthrough students not only get into college but are also equipped to thrive once they’re there. Together, we’re breaking down barriers and shaping the future of education. https://ow.ly/4UpQ50Trnwp #BreakthroughTogether #CollegeSuccess #EducationalEquity #FutureLeaders

  • Last week, our Board of Trustees came together with a focus on advancing Breakthrough's impact and sustainability. A highlight of the meeting was hearing from four remarkable alumni who shared how the program transformed their personal and professional journeys: Betty Hua, Daniel Carrillo, Lisa Ann Kim and Emily Stout. Daniel Carrillo Jr., now an advisor at UC San Diego, reflected on his experience as a Teaching Fellow, saying, 'For as much as I was teaching, we were all actually learning together.' From our Board to our affiliates and alumni, our collaborative community is committed to driving change and cultivating the next generation of education leaders and advocates. #BreakthroughTogether
