About us
Family Service is the oldest human service nonprofit in San Antonio, founded in 1903. Our organization provides services to more than 98,000 individuals and families annually. The founders had faith that their humanitarian outreach could help turn around the lives of people who had lost their jobs, homes, security and hope. Every day we marvel at the resiliency and transformation of those we serve - the people who have faith that they can overcome poverty, adversity, loneliness and despair. Our Mission: Empowering individuals and families to transform their lives and strengthen their community.

Did you know there's a growing shortage of skilled historic tradespeople in the U.S.? A recent study revealed that as experienced workers retire, the demand for expertise in historic masonry, carpentry, and metalwork is more critical than ever, threatening the preservation of our beloved historic buildings. That's why the City of San Antonio launched the Living Heritage Trades Academy. This program provides traditional crafts and skills training through apprenticeships, hands-on training, and class instruction on pre-1960 traditional building construction methods and materials. Last year, the City of San Antonio partnered with Family Service, a local nonprofit social service agency, to apply for a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant from the Texas Historical Commission to bring a Living Heritage Trades Academy course to the community they serve. Using a CLG grant, Family Service enrolled 15 participants from their community in the City of San Antonio’s Wood Window Restoration Program. Students received one week of hands-on traditional trades and safety training, followed by placement with a reputable contractor for an 8-week paid apprenticeship. Eligible participants could receive services such as free childcare, eliminating barriers to attendance, and were provided with a starter set of tools and personal protection equipment to support their entry into the workforce. The CLG program is a collaborative initiative that promotes historic preservation at the local level by connecting municipalities with state and federal resources. CLGs must meet specific criteria to access federal funding through the Historic Preservation Fund, which supports various preservation projects and provides technical assistance.
