After five successful years at United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR), FAST is moving to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) where it will become integrated into the UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub. During its time at UNU-CPR, FAST has emerged as a leading resource for advocates shaping conversations about the critical role finance can play in combating modern slavery. It has provided rigorous analysis, evidence-based approaches, and tailored tools and training. Key FAST achievements over the past five years include: 🔸 Providing free courses completed by over 55,000 anti-money laundering professionals. 🔸 Serving as a knowledge partner to investor coalitions with a combined $27 trillion assets under management. 🔸 Facilitating access to finance for nearly 4,500 survivors through the Survivor Inclusion Initiative. 🔸 Reaching nearly 130,000 finance industry professionals worldwide. FAST looks ahead to continued success at UNDP where the initiative will benefit from UNDP’s extensive in-country networks, expertise, and profile. Now available in Spanish: 📙 “Exploring Migrant Survivors’ Remittance Needs in the United States” FAST has translated this Policy Brief into Spanish, making it accessible to a wider Spanish-speaking audience. The Brief explores how remittance services impact migrant vulnerability to modern slavery, including human trafficking. Remittances can protect families from poverty and exploitation risks while also boosting home economies. Drawing from findings from the FAST Survivor Inclusion Initiative (SII), FAST conducted a pilot intervention to explore the remittance needs of migrant survivors in the US. The report, developed with the Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative at Western Union, and two major survivor support organizations, Restore NYC and Lutheran Services Carolinas, highlights the challenges survivors face in accessing remittance services and offers survivor-centered solutions. Financial inclusion – access to and use of financial products and services – can help protect vulnerable people exposed to the risks of #modernslavery and #humantrafficking, including survivors, displaced people, and refugees. This FAST Thematic Review explores current practices addressing how financial inclusion can protect vulnerable populations from modern slavery, adding momentum to calls for the financial sector to fully play its role in eradicating modern slavery by #2030. The Review provides several key recommendations for the financial sector: 🔸 Design financial services that are accessible, affordable, appropriate, and safe for consumers; 🔸 Consider the diverse needs of financially excluded populations, especially those recovering from exploitation; 🔸 Enhance financial inclusion with financial education and literacy programs; 🔸 Recognize the role of inclusive finance in helping vulnerable populations build resilience against climate change, conflict, and economic shocks; and 🔸 Understand that financial access alone can't reduce vulnerabilities to modern slavery; addressing poverty and structural issues is essential. 📙 🔗 Access "Financial Inclusion to Protect Vulnerable Populations from Modern Slavery: A Compilation of Practices" here: https://lnkd.in/eaR2SffF Written by: Loria-Mae Heywood, PhD, and Leona Vaughn.
