As government, tribal, and academic institutions expand their use of public and private data associated with tribal communities, they have to grapple with questions of how to best protect data that are important to Indian Country and how to represent Indian Country in their priorities. In a panel session at the 2024 CICD Data Summit on November 13, institutional leaders will share their stories and discuss the best practices and policies that guide their efforts to improve the economic well-being of Native communities. Join Chrystel Cornelius (Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa) of Oweesta Corporation, Eric Henson (Chickasaw Nation) of the Harvard Project on Indigenous Governance and Development, and Larry Wright Jr. (Ponca Tribe of Nebraska) of the National Congress of American Indians for this important conversation. President Kashkari, Bank staff, and some members of our board of directors visited Chippewa Falls this week for a regional outreach trip. The trip included a roundtable discussion with local business leaders and a town hall hosted by the Chippewa Falls Area Chamber of Commerce where President Kashkari participated in a Q and A. The group also toured Darley, a manufacturer that makes water pumps and components for military, first responders, and fire departments. (The fire truck pictured was built in 1937 and is still operational!) You can watch a recording of the town hall here: https://bit.ly/3BWAtUc

Thanks to Harley K. for this week's Views from the Ninth employee photo submission, taken overlooking Stillwater, Minnesota. Stillwater is one of Minnesota's oldest towns. On the St. Croix River, its historic lift bridge, built in 1931, is one of the few that remain in operation in the country today and connects Minnesota to neighboring Wisconsin. #ViewsFromTheNinth #Minnesota The Historic Lift Bridge built in 1931 connecting MN and WI is one of few still remaining in operation the country today.

The most reliable data come from the primary source, and more tribal governments are making investments in their capacity to tell their own data stories by organizing a “tribal census”—a major step forward in self-determination. During this session at the 2024 CICD Data Summit on November 13, speakers will share why their respective governments grew their census efforts, what they learned, and how they leveraged or plan to leverage their census data to drive internal planning and decision-making to better meet their people’s needs. This important discussion will feature panelists Susan Bayro (Osage Nation), Liz Boyd (Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa), Anita Lossiah (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians), and Christina Sparling (Snoqualmie Indian Tribe), all representing their respective tribes, and moderator Kevin Klingbeil of Big Water Consulting. Tribal governments bear the same responsibilities as other governments to provide for the social, cultural, and economic welfare of their citizens. However, tribal nations do not possess the full spectrum of governance tools that other governments have available. During this panel session at the 2024 CICD Data Summit on November 13, experts will describe how tribal governments overcome the unique regulatory landscape they face and how tribes are collecting and using data to support the economic well-being of Indian Country. This important discussion will feature Estakio Beltran (Tolteca-Mexica, Tlatoani) of Native Americans in Philanthropy and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Karen Diver (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa) of the University of Minnesota, Dustin J. Goslin (Prairie Band of Potawatomi Nation) of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, and Governor Reggie Wassana (Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes) of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.
