Today’s symposium, hosted by the Advisory Commission on Alternate Licensing Models, is underway in Washington, D.C., and we’re thrilled with the turnout and engagement. More than 175 representatives of state medical boards and organizations involved with medical education, accreditation, and certification are here to share expertise on the legislative, regulatory, and procedural implementation of alternative pathways for medical licensure aimed at improving access to care amidst a nationwide physician shortage. The feedback gathered today from these key stakeholders will inform the analysis and recommendations of the Advisory Commission, which was formed by the Federation of State Medical Boards, Intealth, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), to provide guidance to states seeking to improve access to care by streamlining the licensure of international physicians who already have trained and practiced outside the United States. FSMB has released recommendations for "Navigating the Responsible and Ethical Incorporation of Artificial Intelligence into Clinical Practice." The policy, adopted by the nation's state medical boards, focuses on providing accountabilty for the use of AI tools in different clinical settings in alignment with fundamental principles of professionalism. “These guidelines are some of the first that clearly outline steps physicians can take to meet their ethical and professional duties when using AI to assist in the delivery of care,” said Humayun "Hank" Chaudhry, DO, MACP, FRCP, President and CEO of FSMB. “We hope that this policy will reduce the risk of harm to patients and guide physicians by providing recommendations for state medical boards on how to promote safe and effective incorporation of AI into medical practice in a manner that prioritizes patient wellbeing.” The full policy & recommendations can be viewed here: https://bit.ly/4bDOW43

Thank you to our nation’s medical and osteopathic boards for joining us at the FSMB Annual Meeting. It was a fantastic meeting of speakers, collaborators and learning how to improve medical regulation.
