Living in the northwest means living with a high #earthquake risk. It's important for renters and homeowners alike to prepare and take action to keep themselves safe. #Mitigation not only saves lives but reduces the cost of damages from earthquakes. 📖 Read about the decision our Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano Program Manager, Hannah Rabinowitz, made to #retrofit her home to withstand shaking.

Every year, millions of people worldwide participate in the #GreatShakeOut. This is an #earthquake drill where people practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” for one minute. When shaking starts, the safest thing to do is “Drop, Cover and Hold On” to protect your head and vital organs from falling objects. FEMA is encouraging people to register and participate in this year’s ShakeOut on Thursday, October 17, at 10:17 a.m. local time. Register here: https://lnkd.in/emFd72J Here are four things you can do to prepare for an earthquake and help make sure your friends, family, and community are ready too: 📲 Download the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning app to get early warnings in California, Oregon, and Washington here: https://lnkd.in/gNDaZW-h 📖 Learn more about earthquake hazards and preparedness through articles, blogs, videos, and infographics. This checklist can help you prepare for an earthquake: https://lnkd.in/gEKJ_2Sv 🗺 Check to see if you are in a tsunami inundation zone if you live in Washington, Oregon, or Alaska. If you are, remember that if you feel shaking, first Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Once the shaking has stopped, grab your go bag and follow evacuation route signs to high ground. We do NOT take donations, money, or property from anyone for any reason. We do NOT ask for or generally accept any cash donations or volunteers for disaster response. If you encounter someone claiming to represent FEMA and asking for donations, be careful as that is likely a scam. Get the facts here: fema.gov/rumor-response

During a disaster, it’s critical to avoid spreading false information. 🔹Rumor: FEMA will only provide $750 to #Helene survivors. 🔹 Fact: This is false. Disaster assistance isn't limited to one specific type or amount. The $750 Serious Needs Assistance is only ONE type of assistance available, and it is used to help pay for essential emergency supplies like food, water, baby formula, and medication. We also provide funding for temporary housing, home repairs, and more. fema.gov/helene-rumors

Stadiums and venues provide a central and accessible location to help communities respond to extreme weather crises, providing safe storage and shelter in times of need. With these events becoming more frequent, severe, and expensive, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell and NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier today announced that Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, home of the Seattle Seahawks, will be among the first NFL venues to be designated as a Mission Ready Venue that can be used during response and recovery missions. Through Mission Ready Venues, a public-private partnership, Lumen Field will increase its capabilities to better sustain public safety and be a source of support for the community they serve. The designation identifies the ways Lumen Field could be used for response and recovery activities during declared emergencies or disasters. “I’m pleased to have Lumen Field designated as a Mission Ready Venue,” said FEMA Region 10 Administrator Willie G. Nunn. “In a time of crisis, it’s important that we all work together and look at all options to support disaster survivors. Lumen Field is well-known in our community as a place to congregate for Seahawks games and other community events. When a large disaster strikes, it’s great to know that Lumen Field can play a pivotal role in helping our community.” View the full news release here: https://lnkd.in/g328p3Ba
