In Sri Lanka, women make up 52% of the population—but only 10% of the hospitality workforce. One resort is changing that. Amba Yaalu, Sri Lanka’s first women-run resort, is breaking barriers in hospitality. Led by Jeewanthi Adikari and operated entirely by women, the Dambulla-based resort is giving 75 women the opportunity to learn about and lead in an industry that has long shut them out. From the kitchen to guest services, gardening to security (with seven ex-military women on staff!), these trailblazers are breaking barriers and proving that women belong in every part of hospitality. Social stigma, language barriers, and lack of opportunities have held women back for too long, but Amba Yaalu is leading the way toward a new reality. “This is purely to empower women,” Adikari said. “We invite women to come and join us, see whether they can perform better in their career, sharpen their capacities and skills, and contribute to the industry.”

The French Gymnastics Federation has ruled that female gymnasts can now wear shorts over their leotards in competitions—a long-awaited change welcomed by athletes. This reform applies across all disciplines, including artistic, rhythmic, and acrobatic gymnastics, where high-cut leotards were previously the only option. Until now, wearing shorts resulted in a 0.3-point deduction—a penalty that could make or break a podium finish. It may seem like a small shift, but for gymnasts—especially those competing while menstruating—it’s a game-changer.
