It's #NationalSTEMDay! 💫 What are we made of? How did the universe begin? What secrets do the smallest, most elemental particles of matter hold, and how can they help us understand the intricacies of space and time? Since 1967, Fermilab has worked to answer these and other fundamental questions and enhance our understanding of everything we see around us. Fermilab is America's particle physics and accelerator laboratory.
About us
Fermilab is America's premier particle physics and accelerator laboratory. Collaborating with scientists from around the world, we perform pioneering research, operate world-leading particle accelerators and experiments, and develop technologies for science in support of U.S. industry. Fermilab works on the world's most advanced particle accelerators and digs down to the smallest building blocks of matter. We also probe the farthest reaches of the universe, seeking out the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Fermilab's 1,750 employees include scientists and engineers from all around the world, and we collaborate with more than 20 countries on physics experiments based in the U.S. and elsewhere. Located in Batavia, Illinois, Fermilab is managed by the Fermi Research Alliance LLC (FRA) for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. FRA is a partnership of the University of Chicago and Universities Research Association Inc., a consortium of 86 research universities. Nestled on 6,800 acres in the beautiful Fox Valley, Fermilab’s campus setting offers an informal and stimulating environment with a long history and promising future committed to education, the environment and, of course, world-leading research in particle physics. Join the excitement that comes from discovering the mysteries of the universe! For information on joining the Fermilab team please visit - http://wdrs.fnal.gov/employ/index.html

Update for the #PIP2coldbox: Last week, the coldbox was transferred from the barge to the transport ship for its transatlantic trip to the Port of New Orleans in the United States. Proton Improvement Plan II is an essential enhancement to the Fermilab accelerator complex, powering the world’s most intense high-energy neutrino beam on its journey from Illinois to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in South Dakota. Keeping the accelerating structures extremely cold is essential and the coldbox is at the heart of the cryogenic system. The cryogenic plant is being provided as an in-kind contribution from the Department of Atomic Energy in India, the single largest contribution for the PIP-II project. 🔗 Learn more and follow along with the journey: https://lnkd.in/gKmWFbVg #FutureofFermilab #DUNEscience #fermilab 📸: Air Liquide Advanced Technologies

Exciting update: Superconducting qubits have been successfully deployed at QUIET. This is a major milestone for the Fermilab Quantum Science Center program and marks the transition from infrastructure development to unique scientific studies in QUIET. QUIET is one of two Quantum Science Center companion test facilities at Fermilab. The QSC, led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is one of five U.S. Department of Energy National Quantum Information Science Research Centers established to support the National Quantum Initiative in the U.S. and Fermilab is a primary founding member of the QSC.
Fermilab recently opened the doors to a new underground lab. The state-of-the-art QUIET laboratory will study the performance of qubits isolated from cosmic radiation. Its above ground counterpart is LOUD and together they will enable controlled experiments of quantum sensors. https://lnkd.in/evf8RHuq

Have you herd the news? It's #nationalbisonday! 🦬 The largest land mammal in North America, bison are powerful creatures. Bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, while cows are smaller at 1,000 pounds. Don’t let their size deceive you: Not only are they fast — bison can run up to 35 miles per hour! — they’re also nimble and can jump up to 6 feet vertically and 7 feet horizontally. 🔗 Learn more about the Fermilab's storied bison: https://lnkd.in/gm8P_uGE
