The Capital Campaign Kickoff to benefit the construction of the Filipino Community Village 2 was a huge success! What a great start in our efforts to build more affordable housing and community space for programs. We received $135,000 in donations and pledges! We have now raised close to $1 million for our capital campaign. The Filipino Community Village provides 5 stories of 95 affordable housing units for seniors, STEAM learning spaces, and multi-purpose community areas for childcare, health screenings, and community meetings. For over 80 years, the Filipino Community of Seattle has served thousands of Filipino Americans and other immigrants. They are one of the longest-standing and impactful people of color-led organizations in Seattle and the nation. I attended Filipino Community of Seattle's Kamayan Night, supporting its Filipino Community Village (FCV) 2. Kamayan is a communal Filipino feast eaten with your hands. It's really symbolic of housing justice. Different parts of the feast combining to become something beautiful for all to enjoy. Sometimes the work is messy and not pretty, but worth savoring. When donors, government, developers, and the community work together, we create a place in which we all thrive. Last night, I got to see 'kapwa' - the belief that you care for others as yourself because they ARE you - in full action. This act of being served delicious food in turn for the community to be supporting the work of housing is a beautiful display of how we all are one. There are few moments in my career I feel a real connection to my racial identity and the work I do, and last night was one of the best.
