Discovery Inc. and other entertainment companies are looking beyond films and TV shows, opening hotels, restaurants and other attractions to deepen their relationships with viewers. Franchise IP holds its lead.
"Studios calculate that producing sequels and spin-offs of tentpole IP will continue to draw audiences to the cinema and subscribers to streaming services, despite evidence of the law of diminishing returns. “Selling nostalgia to millennials” is how Parrot Analytics described the strategy last August in analysis questioning how sustainable it is in the long run. However, Hollywood is doubling down on the IP it owns. Amazon reportedly spent $1 billion to wrest creative control of the James Bond franchise from production company Eon on top of the $8.45 billion it previously outlaid for the 007 back catalogue as part of its acquisition of MGM Studios. Warner Bros. Discovery has reportedly spent over $350 million making a new Superman movie to be released this summer in the hope it will reboot the entire DC Universe. This week, WBD CEO David Zaslav talked about a “10-year attack strategy on DC” when presenting the studio’s strategic vision at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. ... There are good reasons for these heavyweight investments. The top ten box office successes in 2024 were all franchise titles. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 led the way raking in $652.9 million domestically just beating Disney’s Marvel pairing of Deadpool & Wolverine ($636m domestic). WBD’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was tenth ($294m). New figures from Ampere Analysis confirm that over two-thirds of the top 100 movies and TV shows in 2024 were based on existing IP “proving its role in audience engagement,” said the analyst. Zaslav understands this. “Almost every big movie that was successful in the last two years was a piece of quality IP that people knew and loved and missed. And we’re on that because nobody has more great IP that’s recognized and loved in the world. From THR: Streaming Nearly Equals All of Linear TV in February, Despite Super Bowl The record-setting audience for the Super Bowl in February wasn’t enough to stop a decline in linear TV viewing for the month. In fact, streaming’s share of all TV use in the United States — 43.5 percent — came within a single percentage point of matching the combined total for broadcast (21.2 percent) and cable (23.2 percent). Despite the Super Bowl driving one of the biggest single TV days in the four-year history of Nielsen‘s Gauge reports, broadcast and cable viewing for Nielsen’s February reporting period (which ran from Jan. 27-Feb. 23) both declined compared to January. The gains for streaming platforms were led by YouTube, which hit an all-time monthly high of 11.6 percent of TV use — more than a quarter of the total for #streaming as a whole. Netflix was second among streamers at 8.2 percent of #TV use, down a bit from January. https://lnkd.in/epD6UR6M
