High-science, high-impact incubator located in the heart of Research Triangle Park
About us
First Flight (FFVC) is a science and technology incubator located in the heart of Research Triangle Park. Established in 1991 to serve the initial needs of entrepreneurs and early stage companies. FFVC strives to produce companies that graduate from the facility as financially viable and freestanding businesses. These incubator graduates migrate into the mainstream of the business community, creating jobs and commercializing important new technologies that contribute to a stronger North Carolina economy. We have more than 30 years experience in successfully launching new businesses in North Carolina. This success lies in First Flight’s turnkey approach—the ability to enable tenant businesses to reduce both their initial capitalization requirements and their annual operation costs by providing affordable space with flexible leases, shared business services, technology support services, and management guidance and counseling. FFVC offers 25,000 square feet of leasable office and laboratory space for up to 40 emerging technology companies.

First Flight’s Krista Covey and Andrea Stevenson Conner attended the Ag Allies Conference today. 🌱 The "Women in Ag" panel, moderated by Karen LeVert was very informative. Plus, it was very exciting to see two of our Propeller Graduates, Toni Bucci from Sable Fermentation, Inc. and Kathryn Pollcoff from HuffPrint Bio. 👏🏻 #AgInnovation #WomenInAg #AgAllies #Entrepreneurship #northcarolina #rtp #raleigh #ag

Our Founders from the Captain's Circle program at First Flight Venture Center enjoyed another great night with entrepreneur Matt Kane. Matt shared his journey and what the future holds for the amazing businesses he is involved with in the life sciences space. He told us of how the first time you see the impact on a human being, of something you worked so hard to bring to the world, asks as it's own kind of drug and it can keep you going through all the trials of being part of a start up. We would not have these amazing dinners bringing together successful entrepreneurs with out founders if it wasn't for our sponsors. Scott Hansen and Chris Otey with Banc of California sponsored the night. As the conversation turned to funding (as it often does for start-ups) we had a great discussion led by our founder's questions and hearing the perspectives from the lending side and Matt's experiences and suggestions for best practices. On behalf of our CEO Krista Covey and Sponsorship Director Andrea Stevenson Conner, we would like to thank you for all of your support.

Thank you so much for the recognition #sbanorthcarolina! We are incredibly honored and excited to continue serving our community through the SBA FAST Partnership Program. At First Flight Venture Center, we are passionate about empowering innovative startups, and this award allows us to provide even more specialized support to entrepreneurs, particularly those from underserved communities with our partners NC SBTDC, NC IDEA, NC DEFTECH, @EGC and many others. We look forward to helping new ideas take flight, fostering growth, and making a lasting impact with America’s Seed Fund. A heartfelt thank you to the SBA for their continued trust and partnership! #Gratitude #SBAFAST #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #FFVC
🎇 Congratulations to Krista Covey and the First Flight Venture Center team on their award of an SBA Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program 🎇 SBA has just issued 49 grants up to $200,000 each to organizations supporting startups through specialized training, mentoring, and technical assistance. FFVC is a perennial winner of FAST awards from the SBA. "At a time when we are seeing historic highs in our entrepreneurial activity with a small business boom, investing in America’s innovative startups is a top priority. America’s Seed Fund, powered by the SBA and fueled by 11 federal agencies’ SBIR and STTR programs, is the largest source of early-stage funding in the world. With FAST, we have now expanded our entrepreneurial ecosystem to nearly every state so that entrepreneurs with great ideas can invent it, commercialize it, and build it with America’s Seed Fund in every corner of America,” said SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman. FAST’s objective is to improve outcomes for underserved communities by increasing participation from woman-owned, rural-based, or socially or economically disadvantaged small businesses through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which are known as America’s Seed Fund. This year, the FAST program increased the maximum funding available by 60% to expand the geographic footprint of FAST and increase engagement of underserved, geographic, and demographic innovators across the country. As a result, FAST awardee organizations will provide support across 48 states and Puerto Rico. FAST organizations work locally and provide person-to-person support and training that increases the probability of success for entrepreneurs and small businesses pursuing SBIR or STTR contracts and grants. #sbafast #innovation #ncsmallbusiness

Fostering collaboration and building relationships is at the heart of our DNA at First Flight Venture Center. We are thrilled to collaborate with Bayer | Crop Science to support the commercialization of early stage agtech founders via our Propeller Program. Thank you Phil Taylor Raphael Dumain for collaborating with us. Thank you Sunanda Dharmarajan PharmD, BCMAS, RPh, Tom Adams and Kirsten Skogerson for join us to share your wisdom on plant sciences. Our innovation ecosystem is strong in NC.
To mis-quote Bill Clinton: “It’s the ecosystem, stupid.” I go to work every day to figure out how Bayer can contribute to, develop and partner with all the exciting AgTech ecosystems around the world. Best. Job. Ever.
‼️ Long Post Alert ‼️ Back home after a fantastic few days traveling in the #RTP #AgTech ecosystem with Raphael Dumain on behalf of #TeamBayer. A few highlights: 🎤 Honored to have given the keynote at agInnovation: Land-grant University Research’s Fall Meeting, talking about the power on industry/academic partnerships and how together we can drive innovation in research and commercialization. My thanks to Steven Lommel and Gary Thompson for the invitation. I really enjoyed all the interactions - the work and mission of the US’s land grant institutions couldn’t be more exciting or necessary. 🤝 Spending time meeting with leaders from across the RTP #ecosystem identifying new ways to work together. The landscape in NC is super dynamic and it was exciting to explore how Bayer can be more engaged. My thanks to Paul Ulanch, Nandini Mendu and Jen Greenstein, Ph.D. (North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech), Laura Gunter (NC Life Sciences Organization) and Ryan Combs (Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP)) for their time, wisdom and insights. 🐺 Having the change to catch up with the teams at North Carolina State University, NC State - College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative on all the great research and innovation taking place there. I always learn something and am left inspired. My thanks to the great colleagues (many of whom have become friends) there: Deborah Thompson, Dinah Schuster, Kathleen Denya, Adrian Percy, Garey Fox, Nikki Olive, Mark Schmidt, Ph.D., Rachel Vann (and many others!). 🧬 Kicking off our “Propellor” startup accelerator program with First Flight Venture Center. This #openinnovation opportunity is designed to support smartly stage startups refine their opportunity, offering and path to success. With seven CRISPR startups in this first cohort, I’m excited to see how it turns out. I’m grateful for the passion (and good humor) of the team there to make this happen: Andrea Stevenson Conner, Emil Runge, Andrea Davis and Krista Covey. Thanks also to Pairwise CEO Tom Adams, for taking the time to come to the kick off and talk about the importance on innovation in the CRISPR space in #Ag. It was a long few days, but a lot of fun and I’m exited for what’s next!
