  • Passing knowledge about financial wellness to the next generation is crucial for a better future — and on October 4, students at the Pace Center for Girls learned important concepts before putting them into practice with a fun activity. The FCCU Foundation, First Commerce Credit Union’s nonprofit subsidiary, teamed up with the non-profit Consulting Together Community Outreach (CTCO) to put together the program for a class of about 10 girls who are getting ready to start their financial journey. The interactive program started with a class covering topics related to credit such as using credit cards responsibly and managing debt, building a credit score and budgeting. While the presentation was geared toward introducing new financial concepts to the group, it also was designed to get them thinking about how financial decisions could impact them down the road in life. Students heard a lively discussion about how to establish credit, what a credit score is, what types of actions can affect their score and how it could affect major life decisions such as the ability to rent housing or buy a home. After the presentation, the Pace Center group was able to put some budgeting concepts into action with a collaborative exercise: a trip to the grocery store to get food and supplies for a delicious taco lunch. Here’s how it worked: The class was divided into four teams, which were each given a debit card loaded with a different amount of money based on what category of purchases they were tasked with making. For example, the group who paid for taco meat was given a card with $75, the group paying for sides was given $50 and the group getting drinks was given $25. Before they went on their shopping trip, the class was given coupon booklets to try to find ways to maximize their spending power and keep their spending category within their budget. The FCCU Foundation works to get financial literacy initiatives into the community to benefit people at all ages and all stages of their financial life. Workshops like the one held October 4 reinforce First Commerce’s vision of helping people to unlock their potential and achieve their financial aspirations!
