You're in the grocery to grab something quick for dinner. 🧺 After a long, hard day, you still need to pick kids up from the ball field. By the time you get home, the entire brood will be hangry. 👺 You have no time to waste. A frozen pizza sounds good but— 20 minutes to preheat the oven + 20 minutes to bake = 40 minutes. Then you pop that pizza into the cart, and head for the checkout. Within the hour, kids are picked up, fed, and heading to their rooms to do homework. 𝐅𝐢𝐱𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭. Fixr content specialist Carol J. Alexander 🏡 spent 20 years feeding six kids in her kitchen/dining room before having the bandwidth to remodel. 💰 💰 As a homesteading/homeschooling family, the kitchen had seen many hours of canning and preserving of home grown fruit, vegetables, and meat. 🥫 Add the many large-family meals, 🍲 and the wear and tear showed. This kitchen needed a complete gut remodel. Carol, husband, and sons removed the original 1960s cabinetry and replaced it with new custom-made cabinets and dual cabinetry pantries. They blocked up an unused door and window to create more wall space, 🚪 resized the remaining window for more natural light, and replaced the exterior doors in the dining room. The new kitchen and dining room feature: • Wilsonart solid surface countertops • Mosaic luxury vinyl plank flooring in Nord Cement • Moen fixture in brushed stainless • Custom kitchen cabinets painted Kendall Charcoal by Benjamin Moore • DPI Kingston brick wall panel painted Vanilla Milkshake by Benjamin Moore • Lighting by Quoizel, Kira Home, and Kenroy Home in stained glass, brushed nickel, and cork • Window blinds by ChrisDowa "I'm thrilled," says Carol. "And to say we did it ourselves is mind-boggling. The only items we tasked out were the block work and the custom cabinets. But if my husband and sons didn't have trades experience, we never would have tackled it. It was a lot of work and took months." Need ideas for your kitchen reno? Check out Fixr's 2024 Kitchen & Bathroom Trends Report. (link in the final slide) Click through to see the Alexanders' kitchen makeover.

When you read articles like "Teen Roofer Fatally Electrocuted on the Job, Federal Probe Launched" on sites like Roofing Contractor Magazine, you can't help but wonder what's being done to make the industry safer for all. Here's some good news. Roofing workers encounter risks from side, rear, and front of head impacts, as well as flying debris and overhead hazards. But for all these scenarios, the typically worn Type I ANSI rated hard hat doesn't provide adequate protection. Some studies now suggest workers who want the best protection should consider wearing a Type II helmet with a chin strap. To aid in this research, this summer Virginia Tech's Helmet Lab began developing a grading system for construction helmets. Their 18-month study will analyze the types of head impacts workers experience on job sites, couple that with data collected from sensors used in decades of studies performed on athletic helmets, to determine which helmets best protect workers. According to a VT press release, this work is funded and guided by the John R. Gentille Foundation, ELECTRI International, the American Society of Concrete Contractors, and the Association of Union Constructors. As a building contractor or home remodeling professional, you want to keep your eye on the VT Helmet Lab next August for their results.
