Help support art education that transforms who we are as learners, community members, and people. Culturally responsive arts education shows students that their diverse identities are their superpowers, giving them unique perspectives with which to imagine a better world for us all. Fleisher’s Community Partnerships in the Arts program provides arts-integrated 10-week residencies led by our teaching artists in K-12 classrooms across South Philly, where kids experiment with art materials to bring their ideas to life, exploring topics from world cultures and animal habitats to personal identity and grief. The support of generous donors is essential for Fleisher grow our art education programming both on our campus and beyond, ensuring that people of all ages and life stages have access to the life-changing power of art. It is with great sadness that we share news of the recent passing of Cathy Hopkins, a highly accomplished sculptor and beloved member of Fleisher’s faculty since 1977. For well over four decades, Cathy supported and mentored many aspiring artists at Fleisher, also teaching at the Wayne Art Center and Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown.  Trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, she worked in a variety of materials including bronze, clay, and polyester resin – her prolific output included everything from large sculptures for public commissions to commemorative coins for the Franklin Mint and an impressive range of props and suits designed for Philadelphia’s Mummers since 1985.  In addition, Cathy taught martial arts classes for decades, speaking of how karate informed her sculpture practice, and vice versa: “Sculpture, karate, they’re all about forms in space. And there’s a need to keep practicing, perfecting. It’s a process.” UPDATE: The memorial service for Cathy Hopkins, previously scheduled for Sunday, December 17 at Fleisher Art Memorial, is being rescheduled for early 2024. We will share confirmed details as soon as they are available. https://lnkd.in/eEhC5fcf
