Congratulations to Luke Mavrofrides, Undergraduate Student at Florida State University, and Matthew A. Cunningham, M.D., FASRS, Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Research Director at Florida Retina Institute® , for authoring an outstanding article in Retina Today on Surgical Considerations for Optic Pit Maculopathy (OPM)! What Patients Should Know: Optic Pit Maculopathy (OPM) is a rare condition that can cause fluid buildup in the retina, leading to progressive vision loss. Treatment Options: The most common treatment is vitrectomy, a surgery that removes the gel-like substance in the eye (vitreous), which helps prevent further vision deterioration. Recovery Time: Full fluid resolution may take over a year, and multiple procedures could be necessary for the best results. Patient Education: Setting realistic expectations is crucial. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, advances in surgery have greatly improved outcomes. September is Suicide Prevention Month. The cause holds deep personal significance for Florida Retina Institute. In February, for the sixth consecutive year, Dr. Jaya Kumar invited physicians and staff to join the annual American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness fundraising walk. Walking together is a powerful reminder that none of us are ever truly alone. Around 80 people walked alongside Dr. Kumar, each proudly wearing T-shirts adorned with a sunflower and the phrase "You Are My Sunshine"—a symbol of hope, resilience, and light, even in the darkest of times. With our entire team and community standing together, we remember and honor those we’ve lost to suicide, including beloved family members and friends. While many resources and solutions exist to address physician suicide, Dr. Kumar believes that one of the most important steps is breaking down the walls of shame and stigma and opening up spaces for honest conversations about mental health. These moments of connection are where healing begins, fostering hope and a path forward. We are deeply committed to raising awareness, offering support, and creating an environment of empathy, compassion, and understanding. Every life is precious, and there is always hope for tomorrow. Together, we can create a world where no one feels alone in their struggles. Let’s keep the conversation alive—you are not alone. Help is available.
