🔎 During the breakout session co-hosted by Food Systems for the Future (FSF) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) at the World Food Prize Foundation 2024 Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogues, moderator Ertharin Cousin fostered a collaborative dialogue with Britt Groosman, Shirley Tarawali, Paul Newnham & Carlos M. Saviani on transitioning to lower methane food systems. Recognizing livestock as a leading driver of methane emissions while also a vital source of livelihoods and nutrition globally, panelists share their thoughts on pathways forward that deliver a better food system for People and Planet. Key insights included: ✅ We need to do more with less - including by driving efficiencies in livestock production and reducing meat waste in how we prepare and consume food. ✅Common ground exists across the ruminant meat and complementary protein value chains, including challenges in driving consumer demand and willingness to pay for more sustainable alternatives. ✅Bundling mitigation and animal health technologies can help achieve significant reductions in methane emissions, while also providing adaptation benefits. ✅The narrative must shift away from plant vs. animal source ‘protein’ to a narrative that centers around healthy, diverse diets and leans into and celebrates culture, heritage, and identity. How do we reimagine the role of meat in a meal to being complementary instead of the centerpiece? Overall, the session called for AMBITION, URGENCY, and IMAGINATION in driving collective action that will reduce methane emissions while ensuring nutrition security and sustainable livelihoods for all.
