-Any related posts reflect only the views of the project. - FOODGUARD is a Horizon EU project that aims to develop and demonstrate co-created solutions that will support innovations & advances based on microbiome, microbial activities & technology hubs to address food, health, economic and environmental challenges.The envisioned approach consists of a framework of toolsets & methodologies to provide sustainable solutions in food processing, packaging & across the food value chain to address food shelf-life increase & waste reduction in a holistic manner. The proposed solutions aim to (a) extend food shelf life with novel packaging/ biopreservation i.e. use of protective cultures/synthetic microbial consortia, recyclable films with natural antimicrobials or protective cultures; (b)monitor food quality/safety/shelf life with microbial indicators/molecular biomarkers used in smart packaging (TTIs, smart printed tags, no-invasive sensors)& (c) accurately predict food shelf life & improve traceability using predictive models, AI/ML, Internet of Things & tools like QR,NFR etc.

🌍 Understanding the Difference: Food Loss vs. Food Waste 🍽️ Food loss and food waste may seem similar but are fundamentally different challenges in our global food system. 👉 Food Loss occurs when food unintentionally becomes unfit for consumption before it reaches people. It’s more common in lower-income countries, often due to damage from pests, mold, or improper handling during production and transport. 👉 Food Waste happens when food that’s still safe to eat is discarded, either before or after it spoils. The Bio3 forum organised for 2nd year in Athens 1-5 September 2024, by BioInnovation Greece, is a highly significant event that aims to bring together scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry. Session 11: "Microbiome-based solutions for the food industry" featured presentations of FOODGUARD by George-John Nychas, Panagiotis Skandamis, Chrysoula Tassou and Fady Mohareb. It was an excellent opportunity to emphasise the relevance of the food microbiome and microbial activity in food preservation, safety, quality, early detection of food spoilage, thus reducing food loss and waste. 🌍🍴 Turning Food Waste into Clean Energy: Lessons from Olympic Games 2024 🍴🌍 Even with top chefs and meticulous planning at the world’s largest sporting event, some food waste is inevitable. Think of the egg shells from baking croissants or the chicken bones from coq au vin. But instead of letting this waste go to landfill, the Games have committed to recovering 80% of it for composting or anaerobic digestion to produce clean energy. In France, food waste recycling has become mandatory for all households and businesses as of January 2024, a move further highlighted by the Games. This shift is not just happening in France—over in the UK, many of us are already separating food waste, and by March 2026, it will be mandatory for Local Authorities in England to provide separate collections for households. Currently, 60% of food waste in the UK comes from our homes. By simply filling our food caddies, we can all contribute to diverting waste from landfill and support the production of renewable energy through anaerobic digestion.
