There is an often unspoken, yet looming crisis in America. And that’s the retirement crisis that affects the 50% of Americans that are woefully unprepared (often have saved $0) to retire with grace, which often forces many of our elders to work way beyond retirement age, or lean on others for support, or live in poverty. Often, it’s not their fault - when economic opportunity is not broad and wide and people are faced with difficult choices such as putting food on the table and contributing to their retirement, the choice is easy and understandable. However, this also often places an even more arduous impact on our society’s social safety net. It’s why the discussions with State Treasurers Dave Young (CO), Mike Pieciak (VT), Mike Pellicciotti (WA) and James Diossa (RI) on establishing retirement security through Secure Choice retirement plans are so critical to establishing a foundation of economic stability, economic empowerment and wealth building for Americans young and old. Started in 2015, there are now 20 states that have launched these plans with many more to come we hope… it’s not the holy grail, but we have to start somewhere. We can’t just gripe, but we have to be willing to be part of the solution. A shout out to For the Long Term and Treasurer Michael Frerichs (IL) for leading and facilitating on this important topic that while may seem innocuous and mundane, but has a critical and substantive impact on tomorrow’s future. #retirementsecurity #leadership
