As Global Fellow Maria Cristina de Araujo said, we won’t know what our communities need if we’re not there. For the past two years, our Global Fellows Network has had the privilege of immersing in an unforgettable community empowerment experience in northeast Brazil. Through music, dance, cooking and hands-on learning, they connected with the quilombo community of Baixada Maranhão — descendants of formerly enslaved Black and Indigenous people — gaining invaluable insights on resilience, tradition and collective progress. The lessons learned go beyond cultural exchange — they inspire new ways for our fellows to strengthen their communities.
