Culture is the medicine that heals the deep wounds of racism and dehumanization. For many Indigenous communities and communities of color, healing and spirituality are not just practices but central to their way of life, vital to sustaining collective hope and well-being. Reclaiming the humanity of young people of color and the communities that nurture them.
About us
Forward Promise affirms the full humanity of people of color and rallies against the narratives, policies, and practices that dehumanize them. Our work asserts that young people heal, grow, and thrive in healthy villages; therefore, we advance individual and structural solutions rooted in culture that strengthen whole communities. For far too long, people of color have faced barriers to equality in this country, manifesting in racial disparities in educational outcomes, inequities in funding, and other systemic challenges that deny opportunities to our youth. But how can we change this? What solutions can we explore together? How can culturally responsive healing practices in the classroom transform the lives of young people of color (YPOC)? We invite you to join us for Part 1 of our new webinar series on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 12 pm ET, where we’ll dive into these critical questions. This session will feature insightful conversations with Ron Walker, founder of COSEBOC (Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color), and Zane Rosette, Executive Director of Native American Community Academy. Let’s come together to explore how we can create lasting change. Leaders of color fighting for racial justice bear the immense weight of their communities' struggles, navigating both personal and systemic challenges. The work is critical and deeply meaningful, yet it comes at a cost — burnout is a constant threat. Modeling rest, self-care, and collective care is an act of resistance. Our worth is not defined by how much we work. It’s about creating structures that allow us to thrive, addressing both individual and systemic causes of burnout. Jonathan Leon, Ed.D., Senior Director, attended the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Healthy Children and Families Grantee Summit in Detroit last week, and wanted to share his reflection: We began the summit experience with an amazing site visit to the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center, where we learned about the history of collective impact, advocacy, and community. On day two, we took part in care-focused sessions, closing out our day with healing-based sessions. Our visit that evening to The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History for our reception was such a grounding experience being able to reflect on our stories of disrupting dehumanization." We wouldn't be where we are without our partnership with RWJF! Learn more about our work at ForwardPromise.org. #RWJF #ForwardPromise #ThrivingCommunities #ThrivingYouth #DisruptingDehumanization
